Doing a trip accross Oz -from Perth to the Gold Coast - Does any one know if there has been a book written on the classic wave sailing spots to sail on the way ?

Why would you leave Western Australia in Summer? Consistent afternoon seabreezes, warm weather, good lifestyle.

Gold Coast in February-March used to be cyclone season - big swells, big offshores, great surfing all the way up the East Coast. Few less cyclones nowadays .... global warming and all that.

For waves can't go past Cactus and the York Penisula .....just make sure that you are **** hot with the gybes. Would not want to spend too much time in the water around there. Just a few Noahs

And off course there is Byron with the afternoon seabreezes at the Pass.

What is the beach just North of Dee Why in Sydney (Newport?)- used to be a big crew there in summer.

Good luck to you!

Hi,
Radmac the place just North of Dee Why that you are thinking of isn't "Long Reef" beach by any chance? Good spot in a NE'er, good also on a any direction southerly (though broke my ankle many years ago in a southerly here due to the swell being very rough). Newport is great in a SE'er if my memory serves me correctly? It has a bit of a nasty shorebreak though as the shore can be steep after a storm and so...., BUT because the swell breaks on a point (peninsula???)the waves can be quite clean. Other spot to investigate would be Wanda beach (part of Cronulla beach) down south of Sydney, close to Botany Bay so it gets very clean NE'ers (South Sydney is usually 5 knots stronger than the North, due to the flatter landscape). Port Macquarie is pretty good in a NE'er too I hear, and so is a place just North of Woolgolga (near Coffs Harbour). Actually everytime I have been to Coffs to see my "Grands", it's always blowing a good NE'er BUT I ALWAYS DON'T HAVE MY GEAR (SOOOOOO FRUSTRATING). Good surf sailing on Park Beach near the Hoee Moee pub (middle of the beach) on a NE'er.
GERROA .... how can I forget Gerroa. VERY good on a NE'er, actually the best, after a southerly swell. I've tried sailing here on a 40 knot NE'er once with my 4.2. INSANE. Now I can recall WHY all the other sailers where just looking out to sea and chatting. Good waves out at the Bombie.
BUT as already said ... why would you want to leave WA for the summer? I loved Gerro and Coronation Beach while I was holidaying over there. Point Moore, St Georges Beach .... SUMMER HEAVEN.

Cheers,
Glen

Too right about the lack of cyclones. We are currently having the worst windless summer on record over here. Things seem to have progressively worsened over the last ten years. We have basically just had another two week windless break. The wind has peaked at 13 knots on the gold coast for the last 10 day peariod during daylight hours. To make matters worse, the goldcoast seaway tower seems to add 5 knots to it's readings just to cover it's bum against liability.

I'm moving to WA :)

cheers

G'day Radmac! Thanks for the info.

I think Newcastle is just far enough south to get the good winds. Gold coast seems to be horrible in general. I'm ex victorian and although I appreciate the constant good weather up here, I don't think it outweighs the better wind and surf of the sounth. Anyway, like you said, maybe we will get some nice cyclones up north over the next month or so. Nothing so far at all :(

Cheers again
