Last season. I was happy just to be creating a wake and sometimes getting back to where I started from. Then came the run on a borrowed Bic which had been set up properly. Disappearing downwind at obscene speed and frozen in a position that resulted from the desperate lunge to avoid falling off backwards I tried to remember what to do next. The only article that came to mind was about gybing in which it was stated "Sheeting in halfway into a gybe turns off the power like a tap" so I sheeted in, resulting in a doubling of velocity, much to my dismay.
I bailed out just before running out of water.

I spent much too long on my first windsurfer 1 design, think I had it as close to planing as it's possible to get one of those things.
But no matter how fast I managed to go, there would always be that dreaded sound coming up behind, rat a tat rat a tat ---- and some body on a short board would go screaming past! Finally got my intermiadiate board, and there I was going pretty fast whenI heard it, rat a tat, rat a tat. Thought OH NO not again,

but nobody passed me????
Looked behind --- nobody there!
ITS ME --- ITS MEEEEEEE YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Mine was at Cabarita lake, thought I was planing on my old bombora plastic fantastic but no, when my new mistral lifted up and started really moving I was in awe at how the waves were suddenly still! It was like ice skating on frozen waves, I could go up and down the face of the wave as if it was standing stock still. Off in the distance I could see that waves were moving, but the ones under the board were frozen solid

I believe the phrase uttered was something like FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*splash*

Twas 1986 on an F2 Lightning, couldn't believe it, after a month on a One-Design, then this Race Board, WOW!!!!! Totally hooked me then..... it's 21 years on since then...... and I am still totally hooked........

The world speed record on a windsurfer in 1986 was just reaching the 30 knot mark, and here I am today with many other recreational sailors, regularly doing over 30 knots on basic of the shelf gear.... the sport has developed incredibly over 20 years

It was at Greenhead, 25Knts + 4.7(rigged on a 460 mast!) and a Windsurfer Transformer! Went screaming out to main break out of the straps and harness, hitting the first wave was the scariest thing I have ever done

Way back before the Stock Market crash of the 1980's, which you young fellas never lived through, I was sailing a Tiga Swift, which had a centreboard. When I finally got the sucker planing, water would gush up through the deck at a rate of knots nearly matching my board speed. All that splash just added to the excitement! After I had mastered planing, before each session I'd put strips of duct tape over the centreboard hole on the underside of the hull to block out the water and to get some extra speed. I then realized it was time to start sailing short boards.

Would you say that your first time planing was better than your first root?

same sort of feelings -Nervous, scared of coming off once you get going, are you doing it wright?, will you sound like a bozo if you start chanting 'yeeeeeahh hhaahhhhhh' once you get going. etc

anyway I know both things lasted about the same time for me

1987, after buggerising around on long Fun boards thinking I was planning and going fast, local Dealer rocks up at Lake with this new fangled Strapper world cup Slalom board.

Gave me a go.

I will never forget it
