well i have been getting into the waves and such a fair bit, and being sick at the moment, i have had nothing to do but watch windsurfing dvd's and it haas inspired me to go out and try get some big air, so i can get out there next time and try it out. so far i can get out there and get some ok air, but i cant get the whole big air thing, besides the odd flook when i **** myself and bail out because i dont expect that. so any tips so i can get my self up there and than start trying some cool areals,AND SOME WORSE landings

This is the BIG thing, and not easy to do here, learn BOTH directions, otherwise like me, you could end up in crutches for a month or so.

Basically the faster you hit and the more vertical and bigger the ramp the higher you will go. There's also the stuff about "ollying" (here's where my spelling shows up, firefox doesn't know skateboard terms) the board just before you leave the ramp, moving the sail forward leaning it over more horizontal and sheeting in, keeping the windward rail and nose up.
You then have 2 airfoils the sail and the board, If the sail is too far back and sheeted in too hard it will send you into a nose dive.
You can get more lift from the sail hooked in, but the stacks are much worse if you land bad hooked up. It's not a bad idea unhooking just before you land till you get confident.

The location and conditions will be the most important for getting going on your air miles reward scheme.

Ideally you want x to x on at a nice reefbreak..e.g. lano,corro.
When u r starting, maybe go the jump a bit further at the back....not as steep , so if u have a crashlanding you hopefully wont get worked in the zone by the next one.

At first Try and land so that your ass and tail of the board, hit water first, (for least impact to body and board), waterstart and sail away.

If your up 4 it and find yourself hitting the wave just b4 break, go vertical, and just before the apex, look over your FRONT shoulder and do a backloop, yay! If u find out how to land one...let me know

Steep wave, lots of speed, imagine your sailing through the air and point your toes to get the wind under the rail of the board to push you higher.

Well, it works for me. Downhaul, downhaul, downhaul. The more downhaul I use, the easier it is to get air, and it's far more controllable. Not enough downhaul and the board feels like it's glued to the water.

in the videos i can see that they use the sail as a foil, but they also have the mast alot more horizontal, is this an other thing i should be trying, by keeping it powered but if i have the horizontal, wouldnt this be like a wing and improve my chances or should i go back to physics class

Really? No... it can't be that simple... You serious?

Dang, I'll have to try that next time.

Sorry, Neb. Maybe I should have used the words "All of the above, and..." to start my post.

No you're basically right, that's what I meant by moving the sail forward and leaning it horizontal, it then acts more like a wing. It also means you are lifting the board up with your feet, this helps to keep the windward rail up. This is very important, it makes sure the wind is hitting the bottom of the board.
If you let the board drop and the wind gets on top of it, you'll go into a power dive!!

Some people are ment to go big and some aren't, seen it in alot of sports skateboarding, BMX, etc. think they just have good timing and big nads. if you take of right with the wind in the right spot you can get heaps higher. think we have all hit a small bit of flat water chop, and got 6 feet off the water, on the same day hit a bit of chop 3 times bigger with the same speed and hardly left the water. it's all about timing your pop off the wave.

As Peter Hart says, you gotta have the desire to go big.

Then it's about the sound of your takeoff.

'Pah' or 'ffffh'

(you want the 'pah' )

only one piece of advice... DO NOT have a flat landing on ur favrioute board after a big jump on top of the next wave... it snaps boards....

I think landing big jumps is over rated. I like to go high, bail, then flap my arms like a chicken. It doen't slow you down much but is good for a laugh.
Having a good tune stuck in your head also helps.

Just remember to look before you bail! the rig goes a lot further downwind with out a riders weight hanging off it!
