Hi everyone, Im testing a protection device for the nose of my EVO92. This may help others. I bought a tube of black foam, the type that is used to insulate pipes or slide onto roof racks for protection. You can get it from Clarke Rubber cheap as well.Have it about 1 metre then cut it down one side place it over the mast below the boom attach it with velcrow straps at the base and under the boom. The whole lower mast is now padded and shouldnt damage the front of the board. Give it a try, let me know how you go.Feel free to ask questions. cheers Jack

Another option is to use a long mast base protector up side down. No need for mods, use the velco end in the sail cut out area and clip on the other end on the mast, quick, effective, easy. Just need to place it in the area which would impact the nose.

I use a mast base protector sideways on the clamp part of my boom, as that's what hits the nose on my board. I started doing this after a couple of dings to the nose, and after putting it into my setup routine I haven't dinged the nose again.
I guess you just need to figure out which part hits the board, and pad it.

Hi guys have tried to use mast base protectors but not long enough and sometimes the clip doesnt stay on.You need to attach the rubber at both ends. If you apply some tension to it, it stays in place. cheers jack

I found that the clip was doing more damage to my boards than the mast!!! I've stayed away from anything with a clip since.

What i wanna know is where the hell can i get a mast pad for skinnies? The SDM ones work fine (as in hold on OK).... until you get a huge trashing and the water rips the clip off. One made just a little smaller would be good. Knowing WS gear though, if one is available it is $50 and the SDM ones are $20

starboard make a foam prosduct that is shaped to the front of your board, and it glues on...only found this out coz my mate busted the nose of his brand new 06 carve the first session..hasnt had any trouble since, and it doesnt look to bad either

Just be aware putting foam over the front of your board. I did it, I got some dense foam (like really think deckpad stuff 1" or so) and put it on the nose of my board. It looked like it was working really well, seemd to absorb the bumps nicely, however one day I though i'd re apply it as it was coming off a little and upon removing it I noticed the board was cracked under the surface of the foam in several places. A big enough impact will still crack a board, you just won't be able to see it due to the foam. Just be aware of this, if that's the path you take.

You can also get a mastdeflector. it is a 10 cm high limp in front of the mast with a little roll on top. you just put it under the mastbase. just sold mine for $5. after a few catapults broke the bolt in the base because of the big lever. must be a problem to do with the BIC base. The nose of my board was well protectet.

Mark,

If you are using a skinny in a sail designed to take an sdm (and most are) you can actually fit a pad in the luff sleeve with the mast.

I got a foam camping mat and cut a strip wide enough to go 3/4 of the way around my mast, and then put it UNDER an upside-down Dakine mast-base protector, under the boom, for an extra, softer layer. The protector itself is of quite dense foam, almost like plastic; using the two layers together have worked well, like skateboard kneepads. I've had a few HARD smashes which have done no damage to the board.

Remember, those mast base protectors are only really designed to protect the board against relatively light impacts, dropping the sail when you uphaul, etc; the higher up the mast, the more leverage and the greater the impact will be...

My big plan (soon)is to put a rubber duckie or some other squeeze toy under the pad so that when I slam it onto the nose it'll make a cute squeaking sound and everybody will get a laugh...hey, a whoopee cushion would also work but you have to blow it up each time...

You can get whoopee cushions that self-inflate now - ideal for lazy kids They are full of foam and that squishes when compressed and reforms its shape sucking air back in when released - GENIUS

That's it, then!!!!!!!! Expect to hear a lot of farting noises on the water from now on -- especially in strong, gusty conditions!!
