Anyone else suffer from this , bloody annoying when the first thing you do is ram your foot in the strap and miss, the rest of the sail just doesn't seem as pleasant. Bob

Used to.. but I always sail in windsurfing booties now, so I haven't smashed a toe (or cut my feet on oysters or rocks) for a couple of years now.

One of the guys started giving me crap about wearing booties all the time, until I described what it looked like after I cut the arch of my foot right to the tendon on a broken beer bottle, and how I NEVER want to see that again. He went pale and backed right off!

Not having to worry about huge swollen black toes is just an added bonus.

Accuracy does improve with practice though.

yes

my small toe on the right foot has taken the brunt of the bashings.
terrible to look down and see it pointing out sideways on a right angle.

I've re-dislocated my toes so many times I don't care to count...lately, I've been taking a bit more time and 'sliding' my foot around the strap. Also, I found that if you can get your feet in the straps pre-planing (as you're increasing speed), it makes it easier, and less painful.

I still find that sometimes, the next day, when I look at my toes a couple of joints are bruised and swollen. The upside is, I know when rain is comin'

I did it once, or so I thought. My feet were cold so couldn't really feel it too bad. Kept sailing on it though then when I got back into shore decided to try and put it back into place. Wiggled it around for ages trying to get it to pop back but it just wasn't going. Thought, bugger it, I'll leave it that way, it wasn't badly out of place. That night it started to hurt and swell and go black. Off to the medical centre for an x-ray which showed a lovely little fracture in it which I certainly hadn't been helping by pulling and pushing. Glad the water was cold that day otherwise it wouldn't have been fun. Made walking for the next week a crappy chore.

After changing me footstraps to the outmost position (freeride board) I was doing this constantly on my rear strap. Never dislocated however, just constantly hitting the straps quite hard.....sore for days afterwards.

I've also had my toes rammed into the straps quite a few times (painful), cut feet from rocks or glass, feet burnt on hot sand and frozen feet on cold days. I tried all sorts of booties and hated them. The fellas at SHQ recommended a pair of 3mm O'Neill Superfreak booties (with the separate section for the big toe). Love them! no more toes ramming into the end of the booties while in the straps. I still kick the straps every now and then but doesn't hurt anywhere near as much. They have good feel and nice and toasty on cold day.

Yeh I've been wearing boots for about a year now but yesterday I got to a place called Yallingup on a bigday and you guessed it , only one boot in the car, so I didn't use it and as luck would have it it was the side that I knackered. Stupid thing was I think for the first time I did it on the front strap in my haste to get out over the rocks and swells. Oh well I'll learn I guess.
PS I didn't quite understand that criptic referance to my name, it's a pr-ck of a name and I've always hated it but it's better that what everyone wants to call me!
Cheers err Bob

Stayed at Yallingup on my campervan trip from perth to Margaret River. Very cool waveriding place from what I could see.

Anyway, yeah I dislocated and cut my middle toe in a nasty catapult when getting back into the sport, I went one way and my toes wanted to stay in the straps. With all the blood and bent toe I thought my toe was hanging by a thread. Anyway it's now sort of fused the knuckles together so it doesn't bend. Yummy!

Talking about vulnerable feet: I kicked the fin whilst waterstarting at Cott yesterday and kept sailing for an other hour, not realising the damage.
Two hours later on the couch I still couldn't stop the bleeding with the usual methods, so off to the the GP for 5 stitches. Now I can't even walk around the house.

Yep sailing on a freezing day can't feel your feet looking down see a toe sticking up looking back at you is not what you want to see, then you spend the next three weeks forever kicking the strap

I think that is the funniest thing about it. I dislocated my toe rigging a few months ago, first toe injury in over 20 years of sailing and I did it on the beach! I kept bashing it into the straps as you say, took weeks for it to stop hurting. I tried taping it up before going out because I hate booties but the tape only lasts a few runs. Has anyone found some decent waterproof tape that would work for this?

Won't use my new wetsuit until winter really kicks in.
Cutthe legs off the old one above the knee- hey, pee anytime and keep warm with hood and/or PFD if the wind warrants it.
Cut the big toes off my booties after they started to stick thru, don't miss them.
New ones a disaster, give me blisters.
Cut the fingers off gloves for better winter grip.
Hey, who has dislocated a big toe? They are pretty tough.
