Its getting ridiculous isn't it? Whatever happened to personal responsibility..in the old days the kid would have been told off for being silly.

Yes it should be put down to you live and learn. But also you gotta think kid's dont see consequences so should have been told to stay clear before it happened.

If person teaching newby was experienced, they probably should have foreseen (with 20/20 hindsight) that any newby is a risk to themselves and anyone within a radius of the mastlength. Scare the kids away for their own safety.

But I wasn't there so I can't pass judgement.

a bit true teach was in the hut since newbie was already comfy with rig however it's the kid's family who also has responsibility for watching out where their son as well

Life is kinda like driving don't you think- don't expect others to be responsible or be doing the right thing

If newbie couldn't foresee the problem obviously they werent in a position to be left alone. Probably the parents don't windsurf either so they would be ignorant to potential problems also- they look across and see their kid looking at a windsurfer with a bunch of other kids.

Here we launch in an area with lots of kids swimming and with them being attracted to shiney/techno looking things (as we all are ) you let them satisfy their natural curiosity but either move or tell them to watch out when it's time to sail away.

and why would we want to discourage their curiosity or have parents run down to the water screaming "jonny look out!" as if it's jaws coming to get them, instead it should be "dad, i want one of those windsurfer things dad dad windsurfer dad"

The way I read it, it sounds like the kids have crowded around to have a look and one dived down and hit his head on the board when he resurfaced. The kid deserves a slap around the head for almost denting the board (red thumb away!).

What is it with people and their 'darling' kids these days that can't do anything wrong? I was waiting for the wind one day when some idiot and his kid walked up, the kid was about to use my sail as a trampoline, and the father just looked on. What ever happened to making sure your kids kept away from other people's stuff? It was a huge patch of sand, so it wasn't like it was in their way.

When I was a lad, this just wouldna happened...

maybe the uncle was looking for a bit of payola
we get the same problem out on our salt lake , when you put somebody new in the landyacht you then have to keep the kids and family away but the kids and parent just seem to want to become teachers and head out into the path of the yachts. you often have to be really firm with the adults, and always remember to ask the adults to get their kids to move back

The government closed down the female factory at Parramatta years ago and they don't assign convicts to free settlers anymore.

windsurfing is a dangerous sport and shouldnt be done on public beaches.
You guys really need to self regulate better before more little kids get hurt or killed.
Maybe time to consider bringing in a licensing system to stop this maming of the general public from this extreme sport. or total ban maybe

You're right. I for one will stop windsurfing on the beach and stick to windsurfing in the water from now on. As we are all old people we can probably all agree to stop posing for cameras and trying to do tricks near shore.

The only thing left that could risk our sport getting banned is the general public's misconception that kiting is windsurfing...

Maybe the uncle in JPs story was a kiteboarder?
