can anyone convince me that paying the extra for a "skinny" mast to use mostly in metro/lancelin waves is worth it i`m sick of breaking the normal ones. __________________ sticks
I can't quite convince you just yet... as Ive only had mine since February I too was sick of breaking masts as they also usually rip the sail where they break. I've only seen a couple of the powerex skinny masts break at scarborough and one ezzy skinny break. So far I haven't put mine in any compromising positions....yet. My sails did set and perform better on a conventional diameter mast but I figure thats a sacrifice I'll trade off for a longer lasting mast. I reckon I'll have a better idea of their strength by next February.
Aside from being less snappable, I've found the skinnys give a much better response - but thats mostly cos I'm comparing apples with pairs in that I'm comparing a 90 % carbon skinny mast with a 30% carbon thicky ! Found pumping the skinny (am I on the right website ???[}:)]) gave much more effect for much less effort.
They are also easier to grab if like me your still going for your several hundredth vulcan attempt with what seems like little progress (anyone got any suggestions ?).
Also if you do snap one, you only have to replace the broken half ! And they are easier to stick up the luff. Most manufacturers seem to be releasing them so they must have something going. Even Mr Pryde has conceded and bought out a mutant skinny - I'm sure he'll go the full distance in the next year or two !
Thanks for the input. I think I better get off my butt and go see my local retailer to see what`s in stock ( it`s gunna be windy the next couple of days and it`s pretty hard to sail with just the four or five top sections only that are sitting in my shed ).
