thought i'd post a story as there is no wind.

met my mate pete up the sunny coast for some wave sailing. thought i'd share.

bom forecast was for 15-20knots SE... excellent.

6.4 kult, check. 95lt nxs fish, check. harness, check. um. beter take the formula gear as well just in case.

as normal, got to the beach and there was no wind. we rigged up a 8.5 formula sail each, bolted on the 70cm fins and headed out into the surf on the formula gear. was about 8 knots so some fun could be had.

pete hit the water first. although older he has more energy and can rig quicker. as soon as he got onboard he was planing.

cool, houston we have lift off. i wasn't far behind. and was planing as well, getting dialled in and checking out the wind.

now the thing with the caloundra bar is the waves are always bigger than they look and there is never any wind in the impact zone. why those thoughts didn't cross our minds at the time i don't know. plus, we vowed never to sail there on an outgoing tide as we have both done the swim of shame many times. by the way, the tide was outgoing. was supposed to be low tide but it was definately still outgoing. i said to pete. we'll be right mate. what trouble can we get into on formula gear. famous last words...

by the time i gpt across the passage pete was allready running back and forth looking for a way out through the break, he is a better sailor so normally i follow. this occasion i thought to go it alone, so i lined up a path and took off.

as i headed out i noticed that the waves were bigger than first thought. what seemed like 1-2 foot was actually 2-3 foot. i hit the first wave. bugger, that was a bit hard to handle. then the second, then the third. I decided as the fourth approached, next face i'm gybing. think i may have made a bad decission.

gybed off on the nrxt face and headed back in to watch pete have a go... i decided to stand on my board and wait to see what would happen and then follow him out.

pete was cruising, first wave, second, third, all looking good. at this point the wind decided it didn't want us having fun and decided to call the whole thing off. that left pete, dead still, with a 4 foot wave bearing down on him and nowhere for him to go. subsequently he got cleaned up. i then watched him trying to uphaul with wave after wave knocking him about, still no wind.

eventually he dissapeared behind the waves and i couldn't see him anymore. i started to get worried.

after a while i noticed his board getting washed in with no-one onboard. i started to think, this is bad. pete always taught me, never leave your board. it is your flotation. so to see a board without pete was a concern.

i decided to head out into the break to see what was happening. got about half way out and noticed pete swimming back in against the tide. i dredged over to him. yelling out, what happened... then following it up with,
pete, where has your bloody rig gone. at this point he yelled something back and waved his arms frantically in the air at me.

ok, i guess i won't mention that again... i eventually got to him so he could grab the back of my board and then towed him back to his board.

all was ok, but a very expensive full carbon formula rig was MIA.

We headed back in to pack up, figuring we would go look for the rig a bit later after the tide changed and pete had warmed up again.

about an hour later a guy comes up to us and says, hey did you guys loose a sail. petes face lit up. he told us it had been washed up the beach about 400m to the north.....

he was bloody lucky and got all his gear back. was a great day in the end. another story to lock away in the fading memory banks....

Well my story has zero to do with windsurfing but lots to do with the wind and storm
Was at my Kewdale workshop (for those who don’t know its about 15 k’s East of CBD Perth)this morning just as the second Chunndddraa storm for the morning, hit the suburb.
One of my parts people ( Veteran Phil) elected at that time to step out on the entrance landing voicing "about time we got some good rain"
The front door swung shut followed by the loudest crack of lightning that all of us heard and felt for the morning. Reckon it was right outside the front door. (I know it wasn’t, but it felt like it)Bloody lights, phone, computers all went off, place was in darkness.
Phil opened the front door, face as red as, shaking like a dig sh... razor blades, saying " F....!!!! don’t think I need to go for my yearly check up, hearts working just fine now thanks,"
Reckon if the bugger had carked it right there and then, we would have all, still been laughing

Got my bicycle fixed the other day. Been years since I rode it. The lube in the shifters had fossilised and the front tyre sidewalls had gone to seed and blown away with the dandylions. Anyway the bloke at The Gap Cycles fixed it up for me all smick and dustless. I took it for a ride and I remembered why I used to like cycling so much. I rate the bicycle as the second best invention ever, just ahead of women (one of Gods better inventions) and just behind the sailboard - Jim Drake's (who some believe is God) best.

I just rolled effortlessly down the road and before I knew it I had my spin back and I was flyin' and grinnin' and groovin' and singin' out loud. (The Stranglers "Down on the beaches lookin at the peaches" dAA du Da, da daa da daa du) I was thinkin about my favorite sporting moment from the recent Commonwealth Games (remember that? how quickly we forget). It was Natalie Bates' win in the womens road race. It was great. Not only did it feature 2 of the best inventions ever but it was a great win - well deserved and a guts effort. And Natalie's a honey. If I was young n free I'd shower her with lies n gifts and make her mine.

Nat was in a break away group of about 5 or 6 riders. It was at about the 75 to 80 kilometre mark when Nat saw the opportunity to jump and took it. She got away in the windy part of the course and they didn't chase her down. There were 2 reasons for that - 1) No one had a team partner in the group so they didn't want to be dragging their their competitors up and 2) They had about 25 ks left to go and they had the quite reasonable expectation that they'd reel her in sooner or later. After all it takes about 30% more effort to ride off the front than it does to ride drafting in the bunch according to Phil Liggit.

In the event however they didn't reel her in. That gutsy little honey kept the hammer down and finished about 4 or 5 minutes ahead of the peleton. In the mean time the peleton reeled in the break away bunch and they had a classic sprint finish for 2nd and 3rd. By the time the peleton got home Nat was already being interviewed. It was classic. Natalie's quite reserved and the media dork was trying to gee up the interview with lots of shrill hyperbole. He threw in everything he knew about cycling which wasn't much. "You went up to police the bunch?", "And what about Ami?", bla bla bla, and here's Nat full of endorphins and just had the biggest win of her life and to her undying credit she eschewed the temptation to take the piss and gave us good rational sensible answers to what were a lot of dopey questions. As her team mates in the peleton finished they came over to the interview. Her sister Kate was first. She's a great rider but not as cute as Nat. No doubt Kate knows her sister pretty well and shes thinking how reserved she is so she starts pouring out this great flood of praise to the media dork but Nat already had it all pretty much covered and she looked a little uncomfortable as she attempted to put a lid on her sister. About then another team mate finished and came over, interrupted the interview, pulled Nat aside and gave her a gigantic sincere lovin hug. Then the last team mate came and did the same. It brought a tear to her eye. Ahhh women, god they're nice. That reminds me of a story. When God made women He stood back and said "That is good. That is SOO good. In fact its too good. Once a month you will be bitches". And it was so.

Natalie Bates - not just a pretty face. In fact if she's got a sense of humour she'd be perfect. Perfect for what? perfect for making babies. What else are women good for.
