It could be done quite easily by putting "thumb votes" on images, the same as they are done on posts now.
That way you could browse by most popular, as well as the current "Last uploaded" order.
As a coder though, what appears easy in theory often has little subtleties that jump up and bite you on the bum when you put your ideas into code
I reckon Laurie could do it though
