Too true, so I'll try and remember how I used to tie a boom on.
First work out where the boom needs to be, somewhere between chin and chest, (when mast is mounted on board) is normally recommended.
Slide mast in sail and downhaul till the boom tie on point is accessible.
Place boom alongside mast parallel with it, clew towards mast base, wind rope around mast about 3 times, then cleat it off in whatever cleating system the boom head has. The last one I used had ridges between 2 rope holes, you formed a loop of rope through the holes, then the end of the rope comes back through a 3rd hole, over the ridges and under the loop. The rope is then pulled tight a section at a time, eventually working the slack through the loop.
Pull rear of boom to sail clew, this action tightens the rope clamping the boom firmly to the mast.
Tie clew of sail to boom, then outhaul and downhaul sail to correct tension.
Note older sails had no where near as much downhaul as modern sails, you'll destroy the sail if you over downhaul it!!!!
warning it's ages since I've done this and my memory isn't all it used to be, so might be an idea to try this and come back with any questions, before you head off to the beach!!
Unless someone else can confirm.
