this is my first season so I've only experienced the joys of the summer SSW seabreeze, however this weekend is looking to have some strong SE.. my question is: what happens in a SE.. where do most people go when the wind swings around...
when really desperate, I've headed to the beach south of woodies .. is safety bay any good? As the season gets later, the breezes tend more towards the SE...
I have been out of metro area for a while, but have often wondered why windusrfers converged on only three to four sites? (There may be a very good reason for this...)
On a howling SE, perhaps a drive around to the carpark opposite UWA could see a few NE/SW runs in Matilda Bay parallel to Mounts Bay Road? I have never sailed there but will be up in Perth tomorrow looking for a sail and may give it a go. (I'll be the twit on the blue JP board!!!) Could be very good water-start practice!!!
Why not NE/SW runs launching from East of the Ferry Jetty on South Perth Esplanade on the West side of South Perth Foreshore? I remember from surfcat thrashing lessons at Highschool that the depth was only a metre or so...
Bourke Drive Attadale, near entrance to bottom Pt Walter car park may even be worth a go!
If you're keen for a bit of a drive Tim, I used to head to Dawesville in my early days. take your 1st, 2nd or 3rd left after crossing the Dawesville Cut Bridge heading south on Old Coast Road. I remember it being fairly shallow... ...except for the channels from the boat ramps. It used to get choppy further north.
Perhaps even drive the river and look for other breeze addicts!!!!
If your real keen you could travel to Bunbury on a SE wind. Plenty of places to sail in that direction. Koombana bay is not too bad in that direction, bloody gusty though and a bit boring.
Im sure for timl, who is just starting out in the sport, getting wet and planing would be a buz in any wind direction. Gusty and boring, a SE wind is, for those of us who can wait for ideal conditions. But hey, I'm sure for the newcomer any wind is not bad. The question was originally asked where to sail in a South easter, and I gave a response. As far as I'm concerned when it blows that direction I would rather head to the pub, but for guys progressing it might be a different story. Maybe Hoop you can join me next time it blows SE at the pub or we could be real adventurous and head to Margies!
