today i was out at woodies point. had a 69 ltr quarto board, and a very nice Aussie flag super freak, , just need to ask if it is meant to have a fairly large fold in the sail near the luff. i had a lot of fiddling around thinking it wasn't meant to be there but couldn't get rid of it. im pretty sure it didnt affect it's performance but who knows with a sail they have never sailed on before. but still unbelievable sail although the board was a little hard to get under control after jumps (Because the small fin, 8.25,)the day was the best i have had in a while. any hints
hair cut, im trying before im buying type thing, and it is alot lighter than the equal sized sail. its alot spongier than the normal sails so you don't feel as powered up as you actually are. (very light in your hands) and its a 5.0. it was at least 25 knots and i would be using a 4.5 in that kind of wind because i wouldn't be able to manage anything bigger normally, and today i was on the 5 from beggining to end. if i had the money i would change all my sails to a superfreak, well my wave and freeride ones atleast.
great! I'm just concerned that our light qld winds might not be enough for the SF as far as low end grunt goes. Would be good to check what u reckon about it after a few more sessions on the water
well the new freaks go up to 8.0 now and because they are such a light sail i would think you would be able to use a bigger sail and get more power in the light wind days but im using it again tomoro on a bit of a bigger board, and hoping to get a bit more speed and more jumps and see how it goes but i will keep ya posted after i use it more
Jord070, iv used the sail you speak of many times (avalon, scarbs etc) and i love it too. That sail is an 05 and there is a huge difference in the newer ones when compared with the old.
Re the luff fold, yes you are supposed to have it. It is this fold which gives the SF its qualities. As the sail is dacron it does stretch BUT ITS DESIGNED THAT WAY. When you downhaul it (lots of downhaul) the top batten should start to be floppy. You then adjust the outhaul as needed. How much outhaul you have is hard to tell as the luff always pulls the sail flat when there is no pressure, ie on the beach. As soon as the sail feels wind it bags out giving your profile. Like any new sail the amount of outhaul take some time, but i generally pulled a bit of tension on it and that was that!
These sails are pretty kick ass, though you either love them or hate them. Iv used that 5.0 aussie one when i should be on a 4.2 and it felt fine, still had heaps in it, and given im 70kgs thats saying something! They also can cop a LOT of punishment, reef, sand, feet, alcohol induced (simon!)...... they just keep going
yeh thats another big thing that surprised me. im 70 kg, and i was very suprised by it. shmage do yu have one of the new superfreaks, are they better than the 05 model or are they much the same.
No i don't have a new SF, though about getting 08 ones but.
Iv had a pretty good look at the 07 sails and just by looking at the sails you can see the difference. There are more panels in the newer ones so the sails are more stable.
I think from 05-06 heaps changed, same with 06-07. That said they are constantly upgrading the design and will change say half way through the year if need be, so the whole 06/07 difference isn't as noticeable. SF have been around for a while now so most of the teething issues have more or less been eliminated.
Unless there's been a substantial change in the rigging of Superfreaks, no, they don't have a large fold in them up by the luff sleeve. There are no creases anywhere.
