After discovering my board had water in it I found out that the vent plug/screw had a build up of either electrolysis or hardened salt on the flat surface where the rubber o ring is supposed to fit.The build up has destroyed the o ring when the vent has been closed before sailing resulting in a gap where it should have been sealed. In future I will be removing the plug more often and inspecting it.Now to get the board completly dried out before the big trip out west.

Thanks for tip. I never check my ring, but I will now.

Well maybe u should. It could be salt encrusted. It seemed very tight last time when I put the plug in, maybe the plug was too big. Do you need to use vaseline or something to get it in?

No Zed. They tell me that Vaseline shouldn't be used on rubber. Better to use water-based lubricants.

Sorry, did I read you correctly. Did you say "butt the plug was too big"?

I'd better stop this right now to protect what's left of my reputation.

You mean it's not a rubber O ring?

I don't think that vasaline applied to your busted O ring is gunna fix any leakage problems. It will only make the plug entry smoother and prevent a salty crust forming.

Seriously now - I wash my board down with fresh water - remove the plug - and turn the board upside down overnight. If there is any residual water that has gotten in at some point - then I check if there is any water coming out - the next morn. This gives you the opportunity to check O-ring and vent. You should replace your O-ring - with correct size and diameter on a regular basis as well.

Take the screw right out at the start of each season.
Clean off any salt crystals from the screw thread and from around the vent hole.
Buy some SILICON GREASE from a car shop, (Super Crap spares or Crapco or any similar shop) and put a bit on the rubber O ring and the screw thread.
Screw it in and out a few times to coat the thread in the board.
That will last a whole summer.
Make sure it is silicon grease, not ordinary grease because ordinary grease rots the rubber O ring.
Silicon grease is available in small tubes. (Molykote type 44 or similar). It will last the rest of your life cos you only use a tad.

If you cant be bothered then just use Armour All, but you will have to use it every few weeks as it washes off.
Don't spray it on the board as it is slippery as when wet.

Ah, sorry nbr. Went a bit nutso before. But I'm sure you can understand, given you're response in dzub's thread about wind and work.

You see, when I stare out the office window at the bay and it's blowing 20kts, and I can't go sailing, it makes one go a bit stir crazy. The only real therapy is to go sailing, or vent one's frustration on Seabreeze.

Geez you guys make me laugh
