If you are on an absolute budget, not that any of the above options are really that expensive, the Garmin models that are deemed (just) suitable for windsurfing are Garmin Foretrex Series Garmin Gecko Series Garmin Edge (1 second setting) Garmin Legend Cx (1 second setting).
Basically, you are going to want to find something with a Sirf III chipset, and that is capable of sampling once every second or two, otherwise you won't get a reasonable speed reading, even for "fun."

Really depends on how seriously you want to use the GPS for sailing. I have a Garmin eTrex for general bushwalking etc. They are cheap now (maybe $130 - haven't looked at prices for a while). The eTrex WILL show your max. speed and distance travelled, and that might be all the functionality you're looking for.
But, if you want it for sailing primarily, I think most would recommend a Navi. which is a bit more technical to set up (plenty of help here), but once going OK, is the bees knees.
Simon at Boards Crazy will look after you. I am in the West and he did a great deal for me a year back on the original GT-11 with full ready to go kit, GT-11, card and card ready, along with Aquapac. All I had to do was load software, set parameters, and it was up and running

Prices fluctuate according to the exchange rate. We once bought a GT-11 online from the UK from storagedepot (www.storagedepot.co.uk) and they did a deal with an aquapac for about 100 pounds. Was good value at the time. Their current bundle price is about 120 pounds, but you could probably get a better deal from one of the Australian distributors with the exchange rate where it is now.
splash out , get 4, tape them to you boat and set a record! ithey are good for 126mph they should do a windsurfer I love mine. never had to diddle with batteries since the day got it
Does the GT31 do "speed made good"? IE the speed you are aproching an object even though you are not going directly for it. as against acvtual speed over ground/water.
Well, I carry a GT-31 on my arm and a Garmin on my mast where I can read it. The GT-31 is by far the lightest and according to RealSpeed it is the most accurate.
