Mine did it again today... the same day that I managed my first ever slapslapslap all the way round gybe

However I remember when I turned it on it asked me "Travel Long?" I selected "No" as I'd only been about 20km away last time I'd used it. However it did record top speed and distance, as you would expect.

So if you get the "Travel Long" message, turn your NAVI off, then back on.

(no it didn't record that session to internal memory either

Hi Nebs since downloading the new firmware (still beta) I havnt had any probs. some nice new features too in the latest one too

"Travel long" can appear for a few reasons (eg: long distance from last sail, long time since last use, etc). When it appears, leave it sit on the car for a little while (say 10 mins) - this ensures that it gets updated with the latest satellite data. Then turn it off and on again to ensure that it starts logging.

Note that if you have actually traveled a few hundred kms or more since last use, you may want to leave it sit for a bit longer.

The unit is attempting to work out where it is and needs to update its almanac (the information that tells it which sats to look for). Any time I use the NAVi I always leave it sit for 10 minutes in a clear area so it can download the latest data from the sats. Once it has that turn it off/on and it should get a 3d fix almost immediately.

The stupid thing is that I waited for a fix, then moved it around, and it obviously knew where it was because the speed was changing as I wandered around. When I reset the max speed, then went out for a run, the max speed was what I would have expected.

So it had a good fix, but just threw a tanty and wasn't recording to the card

I really would like to have known what my alpha was, it felt damn quick on the water

The units still get confused due to a voltage drop during computational processing, if there is not enough voltage for the sd card you are using it takes a dump. Who knows what will happen when they start selling the GT-31 with the Sirf 3 chipset, it's a power hungry little bugger and should make life interesting.

The new generation of gps units that record at 5hz and 10hz will have much better precision and provide lots more data.

What units are you talking about Roo? What sort of precision do you think they will reach reliably? Trackpoints or Doppler?

What version of firmware did you use Ben? If it was a late enough version the tracks would still be in the circular buffer.

The newest firmware has the ability to dump the internal buffer, to the SD card. Alternatively, you can use the navilink program (navilink_cmd.exe) to download via the usb port.

When I upgraded the firmware I think this cleared the circular buffer.

I did use the Navilink program, I pressed "Read", and read the contents of memory. This created a folder with the right date, but it contained two sessions in April and May, rather than my latest session. I'm not sure if I'd set up the NAVI so that it didn't record current data to the circular buffer or not... I just went by the instructions I found on Tom Chalko's (and others) sites.

Not to worry, I think the latest firmware is a step in the right direction, hopefully it never happens again...

By circular buffer, I understand, when it's full, you start to loose the earliest recordings.
But my navi doesn't work like that, once the internal memory is full it stops recording.
To make sure you have the internal as backup you have to "clear tracks" before the start of a session.

With the latest versions of the firmware, you can dump the internal data to the SD card. You can then zero the internal memory and keep sailing.
