It is a German Weather service Global model (DWD) and is a little different from most Global models. (Icosahedral grid pattern)
It has a higher resolution (13km) than GFS (27km), but in parts of Europe there is even higher resolution limited area versions (2.8km).
It produces forecasts 4 times a day and hourly forcast slices out to 78 hours for each run. (Not shown on the Windgutu forecasts in Australia - they are 3 hourly slices)

All the info here: www.dwd.de/EN/research/weatherforecasting/num_modelling/01_num_weather_prediction_modells/icon_description.html

For the Windguru forecast locations I frequently peruse, I would say that, so far, it seems a bit on the high side for winds, and often GFS seems more realistic past a couple of days. I am watching and comparing it with much interest though.

It's a prediction, not a prescription.

To me that ICON forecast looks a bit optimistic compared with the Windguru and Predictwind forecasts. It will be interesting to see what happens. I will be looking for a post Mark.

Here is Predictwind for Laurieton offshore. Seems to agree more with Windguru GFS and this is offshore, not on the lake:

I also find the ECMWF model gust prediction to be a bit high usually, but not always.
