Im looking at making a come back to speed windsurfing , however like many others my locosys gw60 is cooked. Whats the current garmin watch thats gpsc approved? Ive read the forerunner 255 265 and 965 but ive noticed theres a few other garmins with onboard multi gps now available. Have any other models been added to the list?

Also how do you rate your gamins?

Or is there a better choice?

Thanks

Wysey

in my opinion the garmin is better than the gW60. Accuracy is very similar. battery life seems better, and it has extra functions like heart rate that I find very useful.
The strap is on pins, so it doesn't get bent and fatigued like some of the GW60 straps did. It's also got good connectivity to your phone and computer.
If you use an under grip on the front of the boom, this reduces the accuracy of any watch.

If you have problems with your Garmin just take it back to the retailer and they replace it with a new one. (Garmin’s policy) I’m on my third which didn’t want to charge the other day, so probably soon on my fourth.

After 6 replacements, mainly due to a stuck button or not charging Garmin chose to refund rather than replace. I never did work out how fo stop the buttons from becoming stuck but soaking in hot water did seem to free them for awhile.

Not charging was caused by corroded terminals, fixed by a wipe of Vaseline and then a cover fitted.

Not sure why you had such a bad experience. I have worn a garmin 24X7 except when charging since 2017 and never had either of those issues. I do swim regularly (several times a week) so perhaps the fresh/chlorine water cleans out any salt that could cause those issues?

I put my Garmin in a cup of warm water after every session so the salt can dissolve (and it keeps it clean). Still like new after >200 sessions (only wear it when sailing).

200 sessions is around 8 months of use, mine died around the 10 month mark, some later but none earlier. Worn constantly, rinsed after use and warm water in shower. Going to be interesting to see how the Apple lasts.

Currently approved watches are 255, 265 and 965.
Yes other watches with multi band could be approved, but it is a painful process to convince the GPSTC Advisory team.

I have heard several stories of people successfully buying Garmins from Aliexpress. The products have been genuine Garmin products.
However you need to factor in postage and possible GST import charges and the fact that you will not be able to return it for warranty to Garmin Australia.

The 265, which is a significantly nicer watch than the 255 is currently available generally at $499 with ebay sellers offering them for around $430. I see Rebel Sport currently have them online for $449

I'm on my 2nd Garmin watch. The first a 245, which I replaced with the 255 when it was approved by GPSTC. No problems with either watch, I continuously wear the 255, as does my son the 245.
