Hi,

I went down to Balina during the summer with much the same intention, that is to find some safe water with good wind. Not much between Coolangatta and Byron though. Just to the south is Lennox Head and there is a lake there which I read about as being a place for absolute beginners. Apart from being a dark tannin in colour it seemed to fit the bill for the novice. I also checked out Shaws Bay at Balina and it is a possible spot also. I did not sail at either location because I was looking for a little more challenge. The river at Balina is a seemingly good spot but was quiet during the week with no one out on the water. I was told that weekends were more popular. The spot were they launch is a sandy beach near the sailing club. Lots of room to park and set up. There is also a very basic caravan park across the road. The river is basically flat but some swells come through from the mouth.

My first attempt at windsurfing was in 1985? When I lived in the Tweed region. At that time I travelled up to the Broadwater to find some flat water. Maybe it is your best option.
