Hi all,

I'm moving from Perth to the Tweed Heads area and I was wondering if I should take my windsurf gear with me. I've got a 90L freestyle board, an 80L wave board and 4 sails between 4.2 and 5.2. This is usually perfect for Perth but after reading a few posts on this forum it seems like it won't be suitable for the lighter conditions in tweed heads. Any thoughts or recommendations ? Is it worth keeping my gear or should I sell it and start surfing or kitesurfing ??

I live in Kingscliff and the closest I can sail (not being a wave sailor) is Southport - 45 minutes up the road. Some wave sailors do sail the south beach of Kingscliff but I understand it can get choppy and quite tricky - quite a few sail Currumbin - about 15 minutes from Tweed. Most people down this end seem to kite and Kingscliff is a popular beach for kiting

Ok thanks good to know. How strong does the wind usually get? I read it is generally between 15 and 20 knots on the good days...

Have had many trips to Coolangatta (just over border) typically during school holidays - April, Sept/Oct, December. Probably summer on average better winds although you may need a 5.4 - 5.7. NE wind is usually a bit stronger in northern NSW. Currumbin needs SE or SSE wind, it is also good in strong NE but a lot of kites. Duranbah - next to rivermouth, can be sailed in SE wind also, swell magnet for south swell.

Broadwater (Qld) can be sailed in most directions for flat water.

Straight south wind head a bit south as too offshore in SE Qld.

Surf is great around Rainbow bay, the crowds will amaze you after WA. You will see some of the pro's if it is working at Snapper rocks. You can almost surf year round without a wetsuit, unless you're real skinny!

I used to live in the Tweed some time back and remember watching a pair of windsurfers at Duranbah Beach. I wasn't in to windsurfing back then, but those guys sure made the board riders look boring. If you are very experienced then this may be the spot for you. The bay has good swell, being a mecca for board riders. Plenty of ramps going out and space off shore if want to gun it.

i met a local down that way last week, as a i spied a good looking spot they reeled off about 6 great spots in the Nth NSW area, one sounded amazing! and there are few that sail these spots.
not going to divulge where but i cant wait to give it a crack one day!
You will need bigger gear to sail SEQ /NSW but there are some spots, just need to travel around and be prepared to sail solo!
A Well known spot short drive south for you is flat rock and also Lennox

interesting tip about Duranbah...where did they launch?

From memory, they were somewhere around the mid beach section. The wind would have been S or SE, so the main gaggle of surfboard riders were over near the breakwater, river end.
