I am on the move from WA to the Gladstone soon. Wondering what its like for sailboarding there or surrounds.
I hear Tannum Sands is the go, but get the impression its all kiteting there. Is there other spots to go to locally also?

So with my gear, what wind and time of year would I expect to get out?

Hey,
I used to live in Gladstone. The only place with waves is tannum, but is definitely kitesurfing territory. Coconet classic used to be hosted there which was a kitesurfing comp. If u dont mind sailing with huge tankers i seen a couple of windsurfers in the bay. The boyne river mouth would be ok in some wind conditions but not tested. But apart from that i have no usefull info
If you like dam sailing check out lake awoonga.

Roger,
In a good northerly it's probably worth the short trip down to town of 1770 (10km north of Agnes Water). Tannum is an okay sailing spot but my experience was back in the mid 80's so haven't been there for a long time. Anywhere they kite means it should be a doddle to windsurf too.

Have heard Gladstone harbour (even though south of here) gets box jellies but I sail all year round in Yeppoon (and kids swim) without any stinger protection. In fact grew up in the water here as a kid and never heard of any box stings. I suppose you only need to get stung once though!

PS - Move to Yeppoon and commute

Thanks for the feedback, I think the commute from Yeppoon may be a bit much, but worth a day up there for a drive to go for a sail. Good to hear there are couple of spots other than local, as I want to get to see some of the coast with the family.

As for the stingers, may have to pick some local knowledge to find out more.
