I there any good conditions at byron bay for wave sailing or flat water?

awsome, for wave you mean? Is it only good in Nor east, what about winds from the sound on the other side of the bay?

Yamba's the best flatwater on the North coast in North to NE

Then the River at Ballina at the sailing club or the bridge in East, South or West
can be fun in NE at the little sand spit just east of the club.

Also try the Pass at Byron it's quite flat once you get out a bit past the "gentle rolling waves" heapz o fun

For waves Flatrock just north of Ballina in SW SE and South
and Lennox Head just north of Flatty in NE

Byron Bay / Ballina area has heaps of wave sailing spots for all major wind directions from North through to SW. If you look at Google earth you will see that there are cross shore conditions in any of these winds as we have a curving coastline. As an example a Northerly can be cross off at Tallows Beach and cross on at Broken Head as a result of the curved coast. An Easterly can be onshore at Tallow's and Cross shore at Belongil because of the curve. There are many places to sail but it requires the right combo of wind strength and swell. To be honest Winter provides the best wave sailing as swell usually coincides with the Southerlies. But the summer provides more sail-able days - (not this one). The Pass is really a flat water bump and jump spot as the wind is directly onshore but on the right swell you might get some upwind wave riding which can be fun.

Hi Trauma - not really. Everywhere in Byron always has a wave - even if it is tiny! But tiny waves are still no good for learning. There is a lake at Lennox heads and there is the river in Ballina (go to the sailing club) that learners can use. Ballina is probably the better of the 2.

IM at ballina now and if by anychance there is some wind today i shall have a sail at either the sailing club which looks pretty good or lake ainsworth which is surrounded by trees. I tried lennox beach but got caught in a bit of a wash cycle much to the amusment of the kity boys as i dragged my gear back up the beach. To be fair ocean sailing isnt quite my bag yet but im learning. Was suprised to see no one sailing at the club though as its flat as a pancake.
