Just received my new Severne Monster speed sails (5.3, 5.7, 6.3 and 6.9m), and can't wait to use them!

I laid them all out on top of each other to compare the different sizes, and it's interesting to see how the sail area reduces at the top as you'd expect, but the boom lengths reduce considerably less as you go down through the sizes. I'd imagine this is aimed at retaining stability, particularly in the smaller sails.

I'll post some updates here once I've had a chance to sail them. No doubt there are a few other sailors out there who've now received theirs, so it'd be great to hear from anyone who's already had a chance to try them!

I've put together a video showing the comparisons and rigging the 6.9m:

No window ! Perks better keep upwind of you.

sails look great, hope they bring you 2 knots more and looking forward to some more fab videos in the near future. And some comparisons with your OD and Machs please.

Just realised no window could make a faster sail and who needs it on a speed setup anyway you are literally never looking laterally
Perhaps overlooked for so long

Not having a window is potentially a problem. On a speed sailing location like Lake George, sailors are often crossing paths on the same and different tacks. The most dangerous situation is interaction between a sailor bearing away and one pointing high on the same tack. Hence, we need to look laterally especially when the lake gets busy.

How good is vision through the red tinted monofilm?

I hope to use the 6.9m tomorrow, so will let you know. My old MACH7 5.7m Luderitz speed sail didn't have a window either and I don't recall that being an issue. I'm pretty sure you can see through the red monofilm pretty well.

Short video showing the 6.9m MONSTER at Henty River on the west coast of TAS. Longer video showing the trek in and more of the sailing and commentary on the sail to come. PS - you can see easily through the sail, so no need for a window!

Great run, could be an awesome NM on the right day. I had a look on Google Earth, but I assume it now runs a lot further south before heading out to sea

Yes, the river changes quite a bit. It seems to close up at the end of the 3km run when there hasn't been much rain and then the beach just becomes normal beach, then, with any further rain, it will rise in level, and then with a heavier rain it will break out closer to where it first reaches Ocean beach. Then the old river slowly drains away and fills with sand and the new river slowly goes from being straight out to sea and unsailable, to working it's way south again, with sand blowing in from the NW filling the windward side and the bank to leeward getting eaten away. There are periods duirng that transition where there could be some good short runs, but we haven't sailed it. I think it only really starts to get good when it does reach the sand dunes and then has no where to go so it starts getting a bit deeper, especially after a good rain (ie straightens the windward bank). I've sailed there 15 times previously, last time in 2017, and have had 40+ knot runs on 10 of those sessions, with a 37.4 knot Nautical Mile back in 2011. So it has been similarly good before, but it can also change quickly.

Here's a good shot of what happens when it does change:

Interesting re window.
I've had a few issues over the years with clear windows cracking. Mainly from threading the mast up a narrow luff tube.
My race sails don't have the issue and are still excellent after 7 years use.
t will be interesting to see how durable the new film is.

I had a luderitz 5.2 speed sail which had the soild colour luff panel. I did notice that issue (blind spot). Seems more of an issue with the luff than the window because your looking forward and up and down wind, where if someone pointing hard up wind and your bearing away you can missing them.

However looking at daves awesome Henty River clip, I think it solves this problem. I'd rather have a clear luff by the looks. I'll find out once I use my monsters

I fixed the visibility on the luderitz sail by putting some mouse holes through the luff panel
