I will be in Melbourne next week with fam and would like to get down to Sandy Point for a look (preferably on a windy day to see some of you guys strutting their speed stuff). How far / long does it take from the CBD and should I take in any other picturesque sailing spots on the way? Last year I got to watch some Slalom racing at Elwood (I think it was Elwood) - water was freezing even in Jan!

Sandy Point is around 20 minutes drive from the CBD, straight down beach road.

2.5-3 hours I would put it at. You could always drop by Inverloch which is fairly close to Sandy Point also. Little less in distance.

When will you be here and how will you be "getting around" while in Melbourne?

Flying in from Rockvegas (Rockhampton) on Sat for the week. Got a hire car for the week - it was cheaper than hiring from Airport for 4 days and dropping into CBD - go figure that one.

Probably catch one of those funny bus things that run around in the middle of the road down there too!

In that case, Sunday 8th will be your best bet. Looks like it will be good for 20+ in the arvo, with low tide from lunchtime onwards. Make sure to ask around with some of the speed sailors...

Thanks Mathew,
Sunday is the only day I can't go - have commitment down Mornington Peninsular. No doubt if it's blowing a gale down there mid week someone will be bound to be sailing.
