Looks like some negative press agains windsurfers and kiters:

http://mordialloc-chelsea-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/kingston-life-saving-clubs-urge-speed-up-on-no-go-zones/

I know that IWC and WV have been working with Parks Vic on the zoning, but this is a bit of a blow.

I think they're just after a speed up on the signage. Reading between the lines, I think they just want a sign outside Mentone SLS before Christmas when it's busy...

On WV, we've been talking to Parks Victoria. They're definitely listening to the windsurfers now. There were some early difficulties with the consultation, but the recent talks have been really helpful and productive.

Feel free to comment on this but bear in mind that most of the relationships between swimmers, surf lifesavers and windsurfers are good and that it's very easy for someone to post a link to this page....

I sailed at Mentone today with a couple of mates and we just stayed upwind of the No boating zone unfortunatly the 1/2 dozen kiters were in close doing there thing and at times would of been in the no boating zone, not that anyone was swimming anyway.
As a rule most windsurfers try to stay upwind but sometimes **** happens and the wind dies and you may have to plod through the no boating zone to get back. You would think they could cut us a bit of slack if thats the case.

I've advised Kite Boarding Victoria. Today was not the first time some kiters just kite through the no boating zone at Mentone. These actions do not help our cause.

Please note; all windsurfers should try and keep out of no boating zones. Please refer to the waterways authorities rules and regulations. For Port Philip and Western Port Bays refer to Parks Victoria (website).

Don't shoot the messenger.

Your right,

It's very easy to cut and paste however for those that don't live in the bayside area and don't receive a copy of the Mordialloc Chelsea Leader newspaper would be interested in this article.

If the relationship between Mentone LSC, winsurfers and kiters was good, then why would this article exist? I'm certain that the reporter didn't just come accross this story and was more than likley appraoched by Mentone LSC.

Quote:
"The club's special projects manager, David Blanks, said kite surfers and sailboarders were breaching swimming-only areas along the foreshore, putting lives at risk and abusing patrol members when asked to move on. "We have regular near-misses and we are very, very concerned by this," Mr Blanks said."

It's also stated that Bonbeach and Mordialloc LSC's also have issues with 'craft in no boating zones'

This post is not an attempt to point fingers, lay blame or poke WV, but to inform windsurfers and kiters (same article posted in KBV area) that this has been written.

This message was needed to be posted.

The newspaper article, like most media reports is somewhat blown out of portion, but the Mentone no boating zone with their current poor signs has been crossed by a lot of sailors (kites and windsurfers) for many years. We all need to be more careful.

On the same point... Sth Rickets is entirely a no boating beach, that means no SE or Westerly sailing there if it is to be enforced!

Those bouys are 'No Boating' not the yellow '5knot' bouys.. so that means no entering and leaving the beach between those bouys at all, doesn't matter about speed

I wonder if they will enforce this same rule on the kayaks & SUP's because they are all classed the same

the fun police strike again

Some really good comments on that link now.

James Toth carries my sentiments. Victoria is very much a "lets ban everything or fine everything" culture....

Must have been a slow news day for the local rag........ nobody really investigates anything anymore... looks into the stats...

I am all for a review of journalism in Australia... the standard here is on par with Womens Weekly articles.... and provide little information for the reader...
