It's not real!!

When you drive through the clearing into the inlet, strange things happen to your mind. The dunes do this strange mesmerising thing with sand. Clocks melt. People with too many battens in their sails drink tea and help you get your van from the bog. You meet people you were at primary school with and mid-conversation they change into other people. If you look at your watch twice in quick succession, it tells different times. You gybe and as you look down at your knees they are so straight that they are bending the other way... not that it matters....

Does anyone have any photos of the pit dunes from ten plus years ago before the dunes grew? If so send them to [email protected]

Actually none of these things happened but I did meet Jim Morrison and an Indian in the dunes.

Here's one from the 1988 speed trials, it was my first trip to Sandy Point, it's changed a lot since then, more so in the last 10 years. It use to be naturally fairly flat across the spit, and mother nature would keep it in check now and then with King Tides washing right across it and massive fronts smoothing out the bumps. She struggles at the moment though with those weeds growing all over it.

Shame it's not like that anymore in the pic, would be a lot easier to start a record breaking run.

Steve I Have some old print pics I may be able to dig out for you to look at.

What about a good dose of Roundup. Damn dune stabilizing vegetation.

Great photo Spotty!
I was on a 3.0 Ezzy wave and a custom Strapper 16" needle that day.
Sooo much fun, except the amount of sand I ingested and copped in my eyes. The smart guys all had ski goggles!
If my memory serves me correctly, the max gust recorded that day at sea level was 65 kts!!
I've never seen so much carnage and gear lost to the wrath of Mother Nature.
I remember Jay Roadley and the Torquay crew absolutely charging that day.
I still have the Strapper needle
