I'm no expert on the area, but I think you can sail Rye (Port Phillip side) port tack out, on this direction. You could check it on a Melway or Google Earth to see exactly which direction the beach faces.

Obviously you won't get proper waves like in WA, but the guys who go there reckon it's pretty good, as there are shallow sand bars that create flattish water on the inside and some reasonable wind driven waves/chop for bump and jump further out.

Others on this site will be able to tell you more about Rye, but it gets better wind on Northerlys than other areas in the bay.

Talk about putting rye down mate . mate go live in Wa, ok. we have beaches here that could match WA anyday . why do people nock vic for, dam

any way mate you want a surf beach just as good as maui with wind so clean you will thnk ya dreaming. try point danger on the sw side of victoria's coast. Its near torquay.

this time of year we get alot of norhtlys so alot of the good surf beaches are better in summer and spring with a southly seabreeze or cold front

i think your best bit would be to try sandy point surf beach as its on a point and you can sail it i think on most directions

but if we do get southlys point leo, point danger, port fairy, and inverloch surf beach is good
and theres millions of more good places to windsurf as well

dont worry about port tack just ride son

and dont worry we do get southlys this time of year . just for some reason mr wind has been giving us a whole stack of northlys this year and they dont seem to be swinging like they use to.

look i have no problem with WA but on its day vic can take on WA anyday son . i have seen some awesome windsurfers, windsurfing waves that people dream about.
just wish i had me camera on me at the time . i live 30 min from point leo and have seen guys windsurfing over mast hight waves at point leo in winter in a SW

looks like i'll go for a bay blast if northerlys and hang on for the southerlys and seabreazes b4 i do the drive..

got a surf at Port fairy and flinders on my way over and these places look great for a wavesail, just as good as WA..... the one BIG difference was there was nobody out and I had them all too myself....dreamy.

Here at Mornington is where I sometimes sail on a Northwest. I park at the pier and launch from the pier side of the beach. Be warned, make sure it is not straight north unless you're really good at handling side on shore break. Also steer clear of the cliffs/rocks on your right about 200metres out. A huge break can form there. I've been pined against them with both wind, current and waves pushing me into the rocks. Most unpleasant.

To be honest in a NW it is acceptable sailing on that tack but a bit messy. I love it on a westerly though from that other launch spot on the same beach and it's also 2 mins from home. For N and NW I think Rye is a much better option but sometimes it's nice to save the petrol.



Not to turn you off but here are some photos of that same beach in 60knots. I don't have a sail that is 1metre so I gave that day a miss

i don't think you will find anywhere port tack in nw really!
sandy point is fun starboard tack if the swell is decent. 13th beach can also be good. havent sailed woolamai yet.

As I already said, Sandy Point (front beach) is port-tack in a NW.

No shortages of waves here you just have to prepared to drive.

When talking about going wavesailing (in general terms) and tacks are we talking about on the way out for jumping or while sailing in on the wave?

Sandy Point / Warratah Bay in the Waves on an Easterly also works.

For Port Phillip Bay "waves" give Rickkets Point a go On E / W or SE. Watch our for the reef at low tide.

Cat Bay area also on a westerly and SW wind but the Gods need to align here with swell size and tide.

Also there is a book you may be able to get your hands on called "Surfing Victoria the Ultimate Guide" by Richard Loveridge (ex AFL player) - if you read this you will know more about the waves here than most locals.
