whats the damage $$$?

I rode some of the twins last summer and while they were incredibly amazingly loose in the top turn- and quite drivey once on rail thru the bottom turn - the price in mobility was too much for me to pay - and they were skittish on fast driven big wave bottom turns. Fantastic for progressing wave sailors riding mushy waves though...well suited for corros, cross on winter mush, the spot (this place really isnt as punchy as its made out to be), green head (there is one grunty section but the rest is pretty mushy)

And then the quads come along.

The inside word is that these boards combine a really fast rocker line with incredible drive - and looseness.

so the holy grail of fast planing and drive thru bottom turns to super looseness in the top turn is on its way to us!

However-

I have an all round fast and loose single fin set up that works insane for me right now (acid 80 / Kode 80 - so safe in big airs - perfectly predictable directional boost out of the lip Never ever lets me down on punts at margs and up north - whereas smaller fin set ups have got me into trouble occasionally when the sailing gets real - by adding a random 15 degree variance to my projection - same with jumps - especially nasty in backies and fwds where your projection needs to be super accurate)

Having heard so much inside goodness- i am personally quite interested in the new quad set up up! The safe "out of the lip boost" on logo to mast high waves will be the acid test of this concept for me. And also the directional jumpability - which is really the same thing.

Apparently the quads plane up super early and may go upwind slightly better but dont quite hold the same top end speed as a single - so the rig pressure may not be able to be bled off completely with a quad - you know - that weightless feeling the rig gets when you are at top speed.

There are some very excited riders in the SB team that have ridden these bad boys.. cant wait to try one!

i dont get why they are selling the quad with an extra box to make it a single as well.

i havent ridden the JPs but from my observations they seemed a little faster to plane up - but potentially not as loose -basically a safer down the middle option for the designers - they look like they go pretty good. Saw lots of crew sailing well on them last summer.

The Starboards appeared to be more hardcore dedicated to the wildest loosest top turn experience possible. At the expense of some speed and planing.

The big scary "why am i doing this to myself?" mast high 3d wave throw sessions are when boards prove themselves to me.

I had a chat with some guys after some testing of the new quads, there was thumbs up all round, fast and lose.

I got a look at on aswell, very similar to the twins from last year as far as outline. i actually thought it was a twin till i flipped it over. but at a closer look the rails are a bit thinner in the tail. the thing that i would be concerned about with the quads would be the weight in the tail with the extra boxes..

Will definately like to have a run on one as i rode the Evil Twins during summer and they where awesome boards for small punchy waves..

I have posted this on another forum and as this topic came up here I thought it is food for thought......

Singles, Twins, Thrusters and now Quads. I'm really keen to try a quad and out of curiosity I'd like to make one, but that got me thinking were would I put the fins which lead me to thinking how do we know if Sboard has it right?

Single fin placement now thats pretty easy, twin well only a few variables, Thrusters well years ago I made a few of those and I didn't find the right configuration I was happy with I know Bourke(witchcraft) did.

But Quads the amount of variables to try out and R&D is huge ! Toe in or parrallel? front set or back set or both? canter one set or both? fin placement in relation to each other and the boards rocker and rail shape, fin size in relationship to all the previous points mentioned. Flex outline and foil shape of the fin and this in relationship to the combined possible computations. One more... plan shape of the board and rocker related to the many possible variations.

In these early stages of quads it seems like a bit of a lucky dip to me.

i saw them testing them at g-loo in march and missed out to trying one cause scotty had broke to many fins.

the boards they were testing were evos just with 4 fins

are they trying quad fins to replace the twin fin which also looked like an evo with 2 fins?

i give it 2 years

sven got me to try them 3 yrs ago, when the idea was just a twinkle in the designers eye.

went up to aussie pipeline on a double mast day, ok on the BT's, good for 5 second floaters, excelled in triple back loops but did seem to drag a bit on the 5m barrells.

in all fairness to scott i think he was in a lot of pain with his hip but he wasnt really ripping it up they were doing a lot of fin changes so maybe they were still trying to get the correct combo.

i did get to try the 74lt twin fin but found it to wide in the tail compared to my quattro twinny just couldnt get the fins to stick on the top turns where as my board stuck like glue

Move the finsback. It's all about fin position with the twins
