Back from two weeks in Nam and one week of sailing. I stayed at Mui Ne which is half day by sleeper bus or train or under 3 hours by car. Recommend hiring a car and driver. Doesnt cost much $70 including driver and fuel for 7 seater newish thing. Not worth trying to drive in insane Vietnam traffic.
Would not recommend taking your own gear unless staying for quite a while as they don't know what roof racks are, and think u r a kiter.
Now what about the sailing?
The monsoon was was late finishing. I turned up in late December. Normally windy by then but only just started up when I got there.
MUI NE; Water was clean and the only pollution was a few styro food containers.
I used big gear. The wind was cross shore. Bit of a shore dump but not bad. Wind was light - I was using 6 - 7 metres but still could get loops off the chop. It seemed like it would get windier when the trades kicked in properly - 5 metre stuff good enough for looping.
Gear was ok at Windsurf resort. Really was less than 2 years old. There was one crappy boom but rest was ok. They had plenty of smaller gear and it seemed likely It was genuine bump and jump when windy based on what they had.
CAM RAHN / PHAN RAHN:
This was the gem Area. Out of time so will provide more details in subsequent post within a week...
Cam Rahn / Phan Rahn: Two hours drive north of Mui Ne. Can hire a Van with driver for whole day including fuel for about $100 with two people. Was 7m at Mui Ne and solid 5m at Cam Rahn! No waves at Mui Ne and head high+ an Cam Rahn! Reef break but relatively even so know worry with coral heads. Would not like to break gear too far out tho or end up on rocks on island down wind (At Cam Rahn). Three spots to sail. Two jumping (a level above bump and jump).
Other spot it in front of town between the two and is Waveriding. Need to start on about mid tide which is when at its best.
Drive there is great too!
Access Cam Rahn from cemetery just south of hills. North spot is a bit north of hills.
I will post some head Cam vid later. Photos about to show up...
Apparently good there until April. I am keen to go back as it had big potential and La Trang is only 1 hour north of phan rahn. Take a couple of rigs and hire a set of gear from Maui he and hang north sounds like a nice plan.
Accomodation on was seriously cheap. We had waterfront for $60 / night 50 metres from the windsurf hire place. Included all u can eat breakkie. Was only 3 star but I did not mind it. Great family setup. Mui ne is big and we could have spent more than 7 days there without any chance of running out of preferred resteraunts, massage places and fun stuff to do. Dinner at mega resteraunt was around $50 for family of 4 and I usually had a bit of good French wine. Massage is about the price of a good iced coffee (if u can find one)...
