Not sure about pure server side java, but there are lots of dev roles in Perth, you may just have to expand your horizons slightly.

If you can already code JS, why give it up? It is a valuable skill and you should be able to learn some of the more in demand dev stuff easily.

This is a lot harder than you think now, far less mining jobs out there now. Can't hurt to try, but I can't see any transferable skills.

Why not just come here and do both? Then see which one is proving more in demand/ enjoyable and do that?

do up a resume with all your skills and say you are willing to do anything. you might get a chippy job on site or handy man, or IT but you might not, you might also get a field job, rehabing drill holes, picking up samples, driving a forklift, driving a dump truck, carrying tools for some fat bastard, cleaning desks. who knows, it's good money and you get half your year off.

Sure people say it's hard but put your name in and be nice, and keep calling and asking if they have anything and you will probably get something, we are always being sent unskilled useless people. so given that you appear to be able to do something, you should be ok. annnd you got to be in it to win it.

If so you should be able to get a Resident Return Visa when yours expires.

If not.... well, go count the days that you've been in Australia, because there may be no point in coming back as your visa will expire in April and you won't be able to get a new one and will have to leave anyway.

Have you thought about looking for work outside of WA? Sydney or Melbourne would be more likely to have software development roles, as most of the country's companies have their headquarters in Sydney, Melbourne, and sometimes Brisbane. Perth tends to have more mining companies based there, but they seem to outsource their IT to other companies or other countries.

I don't think Sydney and Melbourne can offer the same windsurfing lifestyle that Perth would, but it might give you the opportunity to get some jobs here and then keep a lookout for Perth based jobs. The sailing in Sydney in summer is not too bad. Not as good as Perth, but still reasonable.

Having said all this, I think the IT market here is very tight at the moment. I think outsourcing has reduced the number of roles already. Perth itself seems a little bit harder again as its a smaller market, with much less opportunities for IT jobs.

At the risk of upsetting the WA residents, Perth appears to run two different economies where they pay really well for some mining jobs, and not so well for non-mining jobs. In Sydney they seem to be more evenly spread as the population is higher, and everyone needs to be able to afford to live.

On another note, I have heard both stories where people move here and love it, and others that move here and hate it. Sometimes the lure of being close to family means that people want to move back. Others seem to like it here, but look at the cost of housing and figure they were better of financially where they came from.

Let's face it the cost of living in Australia is a total joke. Ask anyone from London or New York that comes visiting and they all say the same: "How much do people earn here?" Once you tell them they all question what's the point. The only people on the planet that think Australia has cheap houses are the Chinese and Singaporeans mainly because they buy houses on the back of ultra low interest rates and in the case of Singapore a super low income tax.

You really only move to Australia for the beach live style and that's pretty much it. WA has plenty of that on offer and in my opinion also has the worlds best windsurf spots.

yeah if i had the option i'd move to Germany.

Why Germany. It's bloody freezing for 6 months of the year. That's one of my motivating drivers for leaving the UK. Winter temps < 10c and sometimes down to 2 or 3c during the day. Brrrrrghhh
