I have a Naish 1640 Jet and a 5.4 Wing that I use in flat water and surf with a bias toward surf. I'm still not that good. Can't foil jibe. But I have started to notice the drag on the 1640. Looking for more glide but don't want to get too frustrated while still learning.
Stick w the 1640 until I can foil jibe at least (and save some coin)?

Or move to the high aspect and go Up to the 1800 or Down to the 1400.

I guess the real question is... Is the HA going to be harder to learn to foil jibe than the 1640 Jet? Or am I just confused about the real question.

Hi
i was in same boat as you when i 1st started on the 1650 complete naish setup but prone surfing only.
i was fortunate to be able to trial some demo equipment of the naish HA range. Trialled all sorts of variants- 1800 front wing with the 450 rear, 1400, and then all above with high aspect rear wings on waves.

from my short 5mth experience as a prone foiler only,
i'd say persevere on the 1650 until you really feel confident on waves and some pumping.
Once you get more of a hang of it and try in different conditions consider looking at trials with demo gear from your local dealer. I personally moved to the 1800 after 2mths and felt way less drag but good lift, before slowly converting to now only HA (1400 or 1240).
hope this helps

After waiting ages for the NPs , got tired, and rtraded my Np for a naish HA 1400 and 1800. Tried the 1400 today and is AMAZING. Lifts easily, pumps like crazy, cranks upwind and glides for miles Haven't tried the Naish surf wings, but so happy with HAs. Will definitely be getting the 1200 as well. Thanks to Dan at Windsurfing Perth for solid advice.(95 kg, 6'4, Today 20 knots avg)

You'll find the 1800 easier to learn your jibes on then the 1650. The 1400 I'd hold off on till you become a little more proficient. Of course, a light wind monster and glide machine is the 2000. Good up till about upper thigh high waves.

The 1650 has a nice aggressive lift and is stable to boot for its size it also is reasonably predictable. The issue you may come to if you change too early to HA is they are quite twitchy and need to run much faster in comparison to the 1650. The 1650 and 2000 are amazing to learn jibes, tacks and all things in between as they are soo stable and glide for ages even at slow speeds with ease. HA wings do not like going slow so much and will exaggerate your every move, so foot placement and technique needs to be a little more accurate.

This said, the 1800 is a very nice wing and stable in the sense of HA's. I would also look at your size and intended conditions you ride in. If you're light, then you may wish to hold off, get a little more proficient and go straight to the 1240HA when your skills are there.

Either way you go, you will learn to use your foil. It is all about flight time. Lower aspect foils allow you to get away with things more easily than high aspect ones and they also allow you to ride slower but still loaded for stability. HA's are a blast, super fast and nimble, but they can kick your ass if your get pushy with them .

good luck with the journey, once you learn it, you be amused at how easy it is

Ride safe,

JB

Great thread...what Naish would you go for as a step up/down Wing to complement my current 2021 2000cm foil, 91kg, with naish 110 and 6m and 4m Units?

Also started on the Naish jet 2000.
I was advised to go for the Naish 1800HA & I'm glad I did!!
Great lift & glide, handles speed well...

I'm still new to this game but the 1800HA has been awesome for me...

The 1800HA is a good progression on from the 2000 once you have things dialled. It will be faster and more efficient without losing too much ease and stability at low speeds. But this will depend on your abilities and needs, sometimes staying with a lower aspect like the 1650 can be a better choice if you want a more predictable punchier wing at lower speeds.

Read through my answer above, the HA's have positives snd negatives to their excellent performance and the LA foils can be a very easy choice with plenty of at call performance.

Ride safe,

JB

If you are keeping the 2000, I would probably go 1400. Such a nice wing. If you are in Perth, you are welcome to try mine.

Im new to the wing, with 6 outings and went straight to the 1400ha and find it great fun. I'm no problems in a straight line and can get the occasional gybe. I did a bit of windsurf foiling prior and used a 2000 for the first 4 of outings. Enjoy

Thanks for the responses. Actually im still struggling with the "on foil" gybes....ive probably been on the water for 2 mths since i got my gear...had perf ear drum and infection that kep me out for many weeks, so will need to get these nailed before i change wing. PSIn hindsight, i think DavidJohns view was right that MAYBE i should have got Naish 125 rather than 110...but will keep persevering...general foiling around and doing S turns etc is totally fine and i can generally foil all sesh without any crashes and get off my knees etc all without issue...but the gybe i fall off 100% of the time! (im 91kg and now in 5/4mm winter wetty here in UK)

Thanks everyone - I'm going to stick it out on the 1650 for slow stability while I figure out the foil jibe (which is coming along, but slowly).

Always difficult to push down that lust for gear.
