Probably a dumb question I am not sure but I have to ask the question on DW or SUP foil. Does DW always need wind as the name implies "downwinder" with wind/ground swell or can be DW with ground ocean swell and no wind? I have no experience in DW and ocean environment but looking to learn if I can understand when to wing or SUP foil. As a winger if it is windy my first instinct is to DW with a wing.

DW always needs wind.. otherwise you are just surfing.. But then.. I guess you could get the odd no-wind sections on a DW run.

If you watch some of James Casey's videos or listen to his podcast, you will pick up stories about doing DW in very light wind when there is enough groundswell/windswell. But you need to know your stuff. And this would not be using a wing obviously, but a DW board/rig.
