Been a lot of news over here in NZ about the rise in attacks over there. I know it's mostly click bait but does it play on your mind going out for a fang? Those shark drone vids are addictive but do show the noahs keeping to themselves cruising around.
Do you guys get spidey sense tingles that somethings not right in the water?

Yeah definitely feeling a bit sharky here in Perth! An absolutely brutal shark attack a week or 2 ago. Big GW came in and grabbed a guy swimming 15m from shore and thrashed him all about in front of a crowded beach of onlookers. No remains recovered either so it definitely wasn’t an “investigative” bite.

Then yesterday a whale carcass washed up right in the middle of the Perth down wind run. Check out this big boy playing in the shorebreak

Perth has also had the ex boss of the Fisheries dept say the govt is lying about GW numbers to play it down lots.

pretty simple math to me.

Ban shark fishing
Allow boats to attract them in for tourists
More folks getting in the water at the beach.
Result? Duh

we can control the first two but choose not to.

if you’re a water person you NEED to know this:

www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-24/anu-shark-bite-new-life-saving-technique-fist-in-groin-area/100488934

but unfortunately the whole campaign was ignored for a handful of tourniquet locations

I wonder how they tested this?

banning shark fishing close to, or from, shore makes sense to me. it's obviously bringing in the sharks closer to the people and having those steel-like lines out there presents a problem to both those in the water and boats going by.

this is why i prefer to ride above the water, not in it. banned sports: kiting/swimming/surfing.

If i fall in, 5-10 seconds of thrashing to get back on board, 10 seconds to get back on foil to safety , the way i figure - its like only 10% of my session is exposed to the perils of nature

Why kiting?

Whale numbers are increasing dramatically, often traveling close to the coast. Whales are a main food source for large sharks, more whale, more large sharks in close.

Where I am in the Northeastern US, the seal population has gotten out of hand and the sharks have followed. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, seals (which are nowhere near endangered) have the same protections as endangered whales and seal population has boomed as a result. Additionally, bunker fisheries are being managed more proactively, creating more food for seals and sharks. The good news is that the ecosystem is thriving, the bad news is that the ecosystem includes some very large predators.

The last few summers have gotten a little bit spooky with sightings, but no real issues. Also starting to more frequently see species of sharks that we didn't encounter before.

The scariest moments of a session are thrashing around pumping up on foil. I cant help but think the disturbance is going to attract some unwanted attention.

We've all got our intuition and I'd certainly say it's heightened in those of us that foil in SW Oz. . . . especially in Sept-Oct-Nov when the whale migration is on. And it's ON this year. Mulitple shark interactions up and down the West Coast. I had a big horse do 2 laps of me outside Boatramps the other day just before the swimmer got chowed at Sorrento. I then went up to foil in Broome and had a 10 foot saltwater croc clear us out of the water at Gantheume Point.. .. our West Oz wildlife is a wonder!!!. Listen to the tingles . . . but still find the justification to send it. . . . coz fear can be just as much a rush as Foil is to froth. . . .;-)

100%, currently in Sydney for a few weeks but will never foil here, the risks are too high, plenty of other locations in the world where the risk are more manageable.

The day you had the shark doing laps around you the ocean was alive with whales, dolphins and fish. Crazy part of the year 🤔
