Did anyone know that PFAS chemicals (which cause cancer, among other things) had been found at Tower Beach, which was apparently closed to swimming in 2023? WTF?

Tower Beach is a small beach about 100m from Kyeemagh, a great foiling and windsurfing spot next to Sydney Airport. In a NE sea breeze, like we had there today, we sail within a few hundred metres from Tower Beach and some of us (ahem, me) fall in regularly. The tide flows in and out from Tower Beach and the canal, past Kyeemagh.

I foiled there today then happened to read the Herald this evening in which they have a story on it.

They stoped using the Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) for civilian aviation applications in the early 2000's. Unfortunately prior to that it was often used in trainings evolutions by the Aviation Rescue & Fire Fighting Service (ARFFS). The Firefighters were initially told the product was harmless and had been using it for a very long time.. And often.

Airservices Australia dedicates significant resources trying to keep it quiet.

With all the early industry it is likely that all Sydney basin's waterways are contaminated with forever chemicals and every other toxin known to man.

PFAS comes from other sources too, including non stick pans. Unfortunately it bioaccumulates ("forever") and is pretty ubiquitous now. Most of us likely have it in our blood
