When I am riding swell with my rear foot in the strap it feels like my foot is not in the right position. Therefore I am thinking about making extra rear footstrap inserts about 5cm (2") off-centered and a bit more forward. If I look at the pro's in wave riding, it seems like they have the back footstrap centered. Is the modification a good idea? And why do the pro's seem fine with have a centered rear footstrap?

I did this to my board 6 months ago after trying to adapt centered rear strap for 2 years. From the first ride it felt like home. So for me, it works great.

I ride a 20" wide board. When I ride swell the toes on my rear foot hang off the edge of the deck pad and it feels perfect.

I also ride swells with my foot offset, when prone my toes are right on the rail giving the most control of the foil wing. When winging and swell riding I remove my rear foot and place it close to the rail, but put my foot back in the strap when jumping.

This seems to be a common technique you see being adopted. Back foot out, except for jumping, and then you want a centered stance to aid in even pressure on landing ?!

Ive tried the foot in / out routine. The problem with that is that one or the other foot position is compromised. You either need to have the strap further back than you want it so that its not in the way of your back foot when surfing with the foot out of the strap, or your strap is in the right place and then your back foot is too far forward when surfing. I finally just put the strap in the right place and I'm comfortable riding everything that way. I ride a directional strap setup and only ride unstrapped when Im riding unnatural stance, at which time I also scoot my front foot back to compensate the back foot being too far forward. Pretty much only use that stance for going upwind.

A handful of boards are coming out with an offset rear strap option now. Omen, Appletree, etc... Some straps also have multiple mounting holes so you can slightly offset the strap, but its only 0.25-0.5".

I also have to add that I jump both ways, so a rear centred strap is the only option for this.

Simple mod for an offset rear foot strap. Works well.

I'll be curious to see if anyone ever tries double rear straps with the rear insert further outboard.

You'll find most pros are riding tiny boards so it's fine with foot on middle. On my big board 85L I just use front straps as my back foot moves a lot while wave riding and is pretty far over to rail. on my 50L 20 wide board it's fine with m foot in the back strap

I just kept my rear strap really really loose and shove my foot far into it. But I took it off because the only reason I found for a strap is jumping and I'm not really jumping much.

Home made from 3mm carbon or G10 plate. Use M5 CSK bolts and nyloc nuts to attach the foot strap.

Excellent! I have some carbon and will try to build it myself. Thx for sharing!

In Hawaii there are guys riding at pro level with back foot off center and center and killing it either way. To me it's more about what feels right to any given rider than one being better than the other.

After a devastating one foot stuck in strap during aerial wipeout windsurfing, was off the water for over a year, I personally believe you either go no straps or both feet in straps. Where you place them should match your natural stance.

I used to ride all my boards that had foot straps (32 up to 80 L) with 2 straps set up in offset layout, but now with a board that has a V strap in the front I am totally comfortable wave riding with the back strap in the middle. I have only used one foil with this board though, 700 cm?, 769 mm wide. Could be the foil or the conditions I use it in, but I don't feel a need for additional leverage with that board/foil combo. The back strap in the center does not feel that good if there are 2 separate straps in the front (that are spaced further apart), but with V strap it feels fine. That said, when riding strapless with small boards I place my feet more offset, with all my foils.

I'm a rider who always likes a front strap and I switch my feet for any long reach. The on center rear seems to put too much weight on the heel side when used with vee straps because the front foot is offset to that rail as well.
I'm currently working on a solution which allows the front foot to be centered on both tacks while in a strap.
Pictures tomorrow when I'm done work.

Sorry for taking the thread slightly off topic but I couldn't resist, how's that Ginxu 2??? Better than a midlength for wing/surf?

@Jafalex To each their own I guess. I am not into jumping tricks, and for now I have set my mind on using a small board with foot straps only when the waves are more hectic - the conditions we have rarely had lately. So for now I am much more in tune with a super k 60, riding it strapless when the waves are cleaner, and/or on flat water of course.

Do you use front straps on the 20" wide board when riding swell?

My feet placement when wave riding with a 19.5'' wide board, strapless. The back center strap would always be just a compromise - something for those who need to use straps on both tacks. Whatever the foil, it's much better to wave ride with the offset stance. Today's video clip as well, to show the conditions.

Omen flux 60l has the offset straps. They work perfectly for me on my strong stance. And on the rare occasion I switch my feet they are out of the way so I can ride strapless switch. That's the other benefit in my mind.
no issues jumping and landing in straps. The board balance is great. Evenly offset is probably the best description.

Ultimately, you should do what feels right for yourself.
After 10-15 years riding skateboards and snowboards regular foot only, I noticed a recurring muscle strain in my right shoulder, and adopting goofy foot was one of the things that helped fix it.
With symmetric straps on your board(s) - wingfoil, windsurf, even snowboards - you have an equal chance to learn both sides. The benefits depend on what your goals are and how well you adapt, I guess. But, unquestionably, it's a fun challenge. My goofy foot is hilarious at times.
However, when the conditions line-up a certain way, switching stance may be exactly what the situation calls for. So, I'm for symmetric straps.

Hi guys

I ordered a custom Wing board . But I don ?t know Where I want the rear footstrap. Cause i am riding offset on both side strapless actualy
I do not jump I just want strap to avoid loosing contact with the board upwind in consistent swell Is it a Good Idea to put 2 rear straps , one on each side ?
Straping in x instead of Y
thanks for your advices
