IMO volume makes more of a difference than length. My 4"0 x 44L ppc is marginally easier to get on foil than my 4"4 Rocket wing x 32L. I also have a 3"10 27L board I ride on occasion. The difference is nominal between them all.
You don't even need nuking conditions in honesty. Moment I have my rocket wing on the surface I know im getting on foil - It displaces well. My 4"0 was a 85% chance on getting on foil in the light; everything else is guaranteed.
Plain and simple - size up in wing. You will get up very easy. You will want a bigger wing until you have your starts perfect, then use whatever you want. Don't be afraid to use big wings, in the light go as big as you can get - think 7-8m. Moderate wind 5-6 and when >20knots a 4.5.

What, dragging a board and a wing? Or do you just abandon the kit?

I,m 95-97kg with a full hooded suit probably a 100kg+? and on my 56l board I can slog back sitting and when the wind completely dies prone paddle back, dragging the wing. That is not unique but also not as small as the vid of BRM with the Tray.

With an 10l board like the Tray I would simply sink to deep to prone paddle it, so indeed swimming and pushing the board.

At what volume can a person sink the board to start from standing under water rather than stinkbug? Seems like that would be more stable in chop compared to stinkbug on something small.

I've had to swim in with the axis tray and a drowned foil kite on more than one occasion - without the foil kite in the way I wouldn't think it would be too bad, frog kick and the board is like a kickboard, wing behind you.

Anyway it looks like i definitely have to try it. i'll probably start with a bigger foil than you did though James!

I know its not really necessary but seeing as i have the board already... plus this seems a nicer way to jump rather than having a chunky board dangling from your feet, although I guess sticking the landing is a challenge...
