sorry to introduce a topic that isn't about parawings 🤔 but for those who still wing and have tried a multitude of different brands, can anyone tell me of their experiences with the best low end wings. i use an Armstrong wing (5.5m ) for my light wind winging, but generally cannot get up on foil unless it's averaging about 18 mph. i've tried different boards, but boards don't seem to matter to me...if i feel no pressure in the wing, i'm not getting up regardless of board size/shape. and under 18 mph, my Armstrong wing delivers zero power. i really don't want to go bigger in wing size. I have an 8m wing but hate using it.

i know this sounds like one of those requests for 'what is the best wing...' where everyone says theirs is, but what i'm really asking is if anyone has encountered a wing that has noticeably better low end than the others they've tried. thanks!

If I remember you are in the jupiter FL area. I am just a little north of you. At 15 mph, my go to is a 5m wing. Been that way for a long time first starting with the original Mantis, then the ozone flow, and now the PPC m1-L. I am 190lbs and riding foils in the 670-890 in 15mph. What weight are you and what foils are you riding.

i'm a tad over 200 lbs. again, boards/foils don't matter. i've tried everything from 1850 low aspect to 1180 high aspect. if i don't feel power in my wing, i'm not getting up. btw, i had complete shoulder replacement surgery over 10 years ago, so my upper body strength is ...bad.

A local guy bought one of those armie wings that's not the latest ones with the pink. Sold it after a few hours because the low end was ****.

I've been happy with the low end on my dlab Unit but if I were starting over I'd buy a wing with a short span like the Gong Aramid. Too much span and the wing tips catch.

(no affiliation with any brands)

I'm just north of 200# and with a 5m I need perhaps 12kts or a touch more. 16kts I can probably make a 4m work if I had to.
Board and foil matters a lot.

I'd try a different wing.

8m duotone ventis, a DW board and a 1750 Amp. You are good for 8 to 10 knots.

I’ve 2 x 5m .
cab vision(24) and slick sls (24)
the Cab has a lot better low end, but it feels heavier and bigger. I can pump it on foil in 8-10knts (82kgs).

I have a 6m Mantis I don’t like using as feels too big now, I think skills and equipment has reduced the size of wing needed in light winds.
5m could be my biggest wing and I don’t think I’d miss many days.
I use a ML and Crest 1050 in light winds, Scotland so colder denser wind.

so my thought are there are wings that work better in light winds than others.

Duotone Float SLS 5.5 has amazing bottom end. Me at 74kg can foil from 10/ 11kn with 1200 Duotone Crest.

I had a XPS 6.1 i bought for light wind however it was too tight & wouldn't hold any wind. It was like a piece of cardboard. I swapped it for a Fone V2 CWC 6m & world of difference. Go for a brand that has a dedicated LW option.

Made the same experience. Had a french guy on holidays at my local spot. Brought a brand new Armstrong MKII wing in 5.5
He came from the water complaining about the bad low end. Asked me if I could have a try. Agreed and had the same impression after testing.
You have to find the perfect cadence to make it going but it is very challenging. When nicely powered up, it is a very fine wing though.
I am a heavy weight though (250lbs).
Gave him my Neil Pryde Fly 4 in 5.5m² and he was up and going easily, as the Fly is a quite powerful wing. Right the opposite.
So...YES, the wing does matter, especially when the skill level is lacking a little.
I personally find the Armstrong XPS MKII a very nice wing if you use it one or even two sizes bigger than necessary as it is very stable in its high end.
But I don’t get the point for doing so, as there are enough less challenging wings to get going in low ends.
In waves it is a little different story, as the swell helps you get going easier , so the wing needs less grunt.
i guess that is, was the MKII was mainly made for.....?
For freeriding it would not be my first choice

This is very interesting, I have the same feeling. I'm just under 90 kilos and not very good at pumping the wing and board together, and if there isn't enough wind to 'refill' my wing (which for me is similar to you, maybe 14 kts/16 mph) after a pump then it just feels like it starts to flap like a bag instead of creating power. I feel like I either have enough wind to get up with a few pumps very easily, or not get up at all. If I'm pumping and the wing stops generating power, I'm pretty much done.

I also ride the same wings (5.5m & 4.0m XPS Mk2) but I used to feel the same feeling on my old wings too, so I don't think it's wing specific, but its probably true as others are saying that our wings maybe don't have such a good low end unless you're good at pumping wing + board.

I've been on the fence about getting a bigger 6.0-6.5m light wind wing like the Ozone Liteforce for a while now, to help me get out and enjoy myself in sub 14 knot gusts. Reading the universal agreement that the XPS Mk2 has a bad low end makes me think I should give myself a christmas present. I agree with the comments about how it's very good on the high end though - I've had my 5.5m out in 35 knot gusts and it's been manageable.

From my experience, flatter wings have worse low end, but much better top end. They also feel lighter and more stable once up, and are better in transitions.

188cm tallx 95kg and used a lot of wings.
First of all I think that board and foil are way more important in unlocking your low end.
2th: a really big wing like a 6 or bigger is good for pull, but imo really hard to pump.
My biggest wing is a 5m Vayu Aura 4 and that isnt the most powerfull, but it is light, compact and not extremely stiff. Because of that it seem to scoop the wind better when pumping.
I also tried most Duotones wich are in general stiffer feeling wings and for me they perform in lightwind better with an psi less to create the breathability.
Heavier wings like North have often a more powerfull feel , but lack imo efficincy.

The boards/foils: if you pump but don,t get moving, that can come from the wing, but also from too much drag from your board/foil.
An efficient ML like the KT SuperKv2 (in my case 95l) slices through the water and getting motion and speed also creates apperent wind.
More or less the same with foils: an very lifty but thick foils creates lift at a lower speed but is due the extra resistance harder to get there. An thinner, smaller more efficient HA wing overcomes that drag hurdle easier, making easier speed an with that lift. in short, yes you need sufficient sized gear, but too big also creates drag and needs more power to overcome.
That was the easy stuff because you can buy it. 😜

The more difficult is technique.
More or less every wing/set has a slightly different technique but they all involve pumping with both arms and legs. For windsurfers this is an common thing, but when i,m on a local lake i,m often suprrised of the amoiunt of people standing there and waiting for something magical to happen like a dolphin to give them a tow or a mermaid who is gonna push them. If you take faith in your own hands and start pumping a couple of secconds before a gusts comes then there is already some momentum when it hits and gets you on foil in extremely light wind with relative small gear that you can get in motion with pumping.
