I'm heading south for a few nights in Margaret River and Yallingup. Any info on spots to kite (flat and waves) would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Andrew

I've kited yallingup a few times.

I (and some of the locals) launched from down the beach through the shore break (known as rabbits). The winds in there are slightly flukey and the shore break is normally pounding, so I'd only recommend it if your confident (or conditions are favourable). I'm positive you must be able to launch across the lagoon on a high tide, but I've never done it.

Out the back the waves are big and fast, but actually have a fairly flat shoulder (on the main left) making it fairly safe. My first few waves here were a nice wake up call after riding Cott. A board that your confident to ride at speed as you race down the face will help.

As for margrets, I've never done it, I hear you don't want to get in the local surfers' way because they're protective of 'their' break. Meh. Go for waves when they're too busy paddling

You can launch across the lagoon, its just a bit gusty on the inside from the rocks and the hill.

There's heaps of breaks between Cape Leueewin and Cape Naturaliste - many still unridden with a kite. Had hoped do the whole lot during the faimly Xmas break but only got one chance on 29 Dec - the wind didn't play the game :-( After waiting for three hours and failing to get upwind around the lighthouse @ Leueewin in 5-7 knots with an 18.5m Flysurfer Titan I packed it in.

When I got to Margs around 4:30pm the wind had picked up to just under 10 knots so I went for a downwinder to Yallingup (40km) before calling it quits around 6:30pm and after having a heap of uncrowded waves on the way :-)

Had a great session at Yallinup in 20 knots and 2.5m swell on New Year's Eve with a four or five windsurfers - took one guys sail in after he snapped a mast. It gets a bit turbulent on the inside especially if the wind swings a bit southerly.

The waves along that coast can get gnarly so I'd recommend it for experienced riders only. Track down a local before you go out - especially at Marg's.
