Just a thought but has anyone ever tried filling their kite with HELIUM. Probably a little exspensive to do everytime you go out, but wonder if the kite would perform better or worst. Might try it if no one has already.

How amazing is that. I was just logging on thinking 'It's about time someone suggested putting helium in their kite again'. Lo and behold, here it is right at the top of the list. It must have been at least 3 months since the last time it was suggested.

Yeah who would of thought putting tomato sauce with bread and a sausage could taste this good.

ARSA - Your flying a kite not a childrens balloon, heluim would leak from your bladders rather fast unless you replaced them with helium specific bladders as Helium molecules are much smaller than Nitrogen. The shape of the kite is what makes it fly not how much it weights so there would be no noticable difference apart from the kite possible being the slightest bit more twitchy. Your better off to spend the money on another kite.

Industrial dry Nitrogen.

Basically Inert, and no significant change in pressure due to change in heat. And relatively cheap and clean.

So the pressure you pump up to is the pressure you finish with.

Now tell me about the downside.

Easy.... Bladder volume = Pump Volume X Pump Strokes to fill it (Count 2 for once up and once down)

Do the experiment 10,000 times and average it out for accuracy. You can start with my kite tomorrow - I'll be at Palmy, and I'm sure there are a few other guys that will let you pump up their kites too. And while I'm riding you can wash my car.... bring a chamoix will you ? ... ;)

erm not quite.

you would be able to find how much air is in the kite if all the air was decompressed to atmospheric. Considering your kite is pumped to like 7psi you would have to do a little maths. PV=nRT, will do.

Ive always like the idea of filling your kite with sodium at around 100 gigapascals, all we need to do is make the leading edge out of carbon nanotube, on the other hand it may be a bit expensive yet the potential fire ball if you explode the Le would make it all worth while

Inflate your kite fully, submerge it in the water, noting the difference in displacement height thus converting to volume. Note: for accuracy, use a swimming pool remember to subtract the difference of your wet soggy kite before you inflate it

i dunno about that one anton -
if i pump up my kite 3/4 full the amt of displacement in water would be very similar to the amt of water displaced if my kite was fully pumped up - the material around the bladder only stretches so much, what changes is the pressure, not displacement.
also if i held my kite at 1m under water it might displace 5L of water, wheres at 40m under water it might only displace 1L of water.

displacement only really works for solids and liquids - not gasses, which can compress to be under higher pressure...

the pressures we are talking about mean the displacement method would be reasonably accurate

pump strokes would suck, too much air is leaked out of the pump, not very efficient
