Hay all.
Anyone know about getting travel/general insurance? Some companies are not so keen on covering stuff like kiting , skiing and various other things that can hurt you. I want to get something that will last 12 moths so then I can cruse about as often as I can.
Cheers

I had no dramas getting travel insurance through Travel World when I went to Samoa surfing. Shouldn't really be any problem getting insurance.

Hi Cray,

Go online to http://www.ikointl.com/my-iko-buy-insurance.php and buy the IKO insurance, it is valid in all parts of the world and covers you for personal accident, Public Liability, damage etc

Their policy is new and the insurer is Lloyds of London so there is no issue with validity and payment etc. They are a AAA rated insurer and have an office here in Oz.

You can purchase online and travel easy! It is valid for 12 months and only costs $78.75 USD.

You can also win a new S-Bow Starkite, and you'll get a free copy of Kiteworld magazine for your trouble as well as 12 months membership to the IKO.

From the IKO Website Quote:

"The IKO insurance covers you during your private practice. It covers Bodily injury or Property damage caused by a member while participating in the sport of Kiteboarding, Snowkiting or Powerkiting.
It covers $1,000,000 Bodily Injury and Property Damage per Occurence, $1,000 Deductible for General Liability and $10,000 / 25,000 for Accident / Medical. "

Pretty good deal really!

Here we go again!

IKO does not cover you for personal injury, it covers you for THIRD PARTY injury, loss or damage.

The key clause is "caused by a member", which in plain Australian English means: caused by a member on another person or persons property.

If you are going to the UK though then BKSA offer insurance for "Personal Injury". Funny how our home grown insurers cant match this but try to fool you that they can. Its a disgrace.

However if I am wrong then please someone correct me as I would love to get insurance for Personal Injury that is specific to Kite Surfing.

Cheers

Hi guys,

Sorry, misread the original post (severe lack of sleep! ). It DOES NOT cover you against theft, loss or damage of YOUR gear and apparently NOT injury to yourself. It does cover you if you collect someone else or their gear. This is critical especially if you are going to somewhere like the US. You simply cannot afford to hurt someone else when overseas whilst uninsured.

Make of it what you will, there's nothing in it for me and it's not compulsory. This is just information that I'm passing on!

Sorry dude, not having a personal pop The whole IKO thing gives me the Sh1ts though as the wording boarders on misrepresentation.

In regards to kiting, just get a WAKSA membership, as far as I know it is a world wide ( except USA) cover for any kiting misshaps and support your local crew, also AKSA / WAKSA are the offical reps for kiting and deseve your support. A yearly membership is only $65.

lol.
Cheap. ^^
But always read the fine print.
Insurance companies are notorious for inventing escape clauses and loopholes.
Check your policy and read the paragragh on 'negligence'.
Kite smart.

Hey Ray,

Great that you pointed out the worldwide cover of the AKSA (USA & Canada Excluded), I for one was unaware of the worldwide cover.

IKO Insurance should not be considered an alternative to AKSA/WAKSA membership, but should in fact be an additional policy used primarily if you plan on visiting the USA and Canada (Lets face it, its where you need it the most ).

IKO Insurance will not gain you entrance to AKSA/WAKSA sanctioned events such as MAMBO and KITESTOCK. So you need to be a member of AKSA/WAKSA. As Ray was alluding to, we should all be members of our respective state associations. The more members, the more strength we have in dealing with the government.

We are dealing with similar problems in the Spearfishing world. It is critically important that all riders become members. Instead of asking what AKSA/WAKSA will do with your $65 bucks, ask what you can do for AKSA/WAKSA, all you need to do is add your support.

Good winds,
