Keep the last weekend in November free in your calender.

I have been speaking with the boys at the Merimbula Wavesailing club (Legends who run the Mambo wave sailing classic), and they have agreed to include SUP as one of the divisions in this years mambo. Now we still have to finalize all rules (to those of your that no Mambo, there aren't many!). But it is going to be an awesome event. Make use of those early mornings with no wind by SUP'ing and then get out your wind gear in the arvo for a session, couldn't be better.

There is heaps of great prizes also for just about any reason, and every ones a winner at mambo. All day BBQ, drinks, parties every night, awesome location, great friends.

I hope you can all make it, I would love for Mambo to include SUP every year.

The dates are 27th, 28th, 29th & 30th of November. And the event is "THE MAMBO WAVE SAILING CLASSIC". Located at Merimbula beach (base it at FORD OVAL).

Click here to get an idea of how massive this event is. http://www.acr.net.au/~msc/

Such a good event! I will updat this thread as we work though the formalities. I was just too excited, and had to let you all know.

Regards,

Also just to add, you don't have to sail to go in the event, you can just SUP if your not a sailor! (but hey, while your there, why not give it a try). On the super windy days, I will organizing flatwater tours of the fish pen and surrounding river systems. There's always somewhere to paddle! And I want to do a big downwinder early one morning to wash away that hangover. Maybe from Pambula or Turra depending on wind direction.

That's great news JB...I was going to call John or Henry myself but thought I'd do a trip up there and talk face to face about it..I left them both SUP dvd's last year.

It makes a lot of sense because we spend so much time waiting for wind..and it's a perfect SUP place...I was sure they'd agree to adding SUP to the agenda.

They added kite's many years ago to what was a windsurfing comp because it improved those low wind days that we would struggle on windsurfers..so why not add SUP for when there's no wind at all.

For those who don't know anything about the Mambo listen up..

First..It's not really a comp..There's no heats or races..It's just four days of fun windsurfing, kite surfing, normal surfing and SUP (and eating at the barbie)...and the winners are chosen by the judges that could be anyone watching and at the end of each day get together to discuss the days action..At the end of it all come up with names of who deserves to be winners in each catagory..Men, women, Juniors, old farts etc.

I've been to every one and this year is number 28..Yes 28 years..It's the longest running event like this in the world..They don't need to advertise it because each year they get about 200 people entering and you can only have so many..Most who go once will come back for more.

When you enter and get your T shirt and wrist band you can eat at the BBQ all day every day..breakfast, lunch and tea..as often as you like..You just pay for your drinks..You can sit it out if it's too big or too small and just watch the action..The best in Oz and often from around the world are there.

You can go up the beach or down the beach to get away from crowds..or right in front of the main area if you like..There's heaps of room for everyone...At the end when the winners get their trophy's and prizes every one else gets a prize..everyone..even if it's just a hat or shirt.

Here's some pics from Merimbula for those who've never been there..btw..It's pretty much between Melbourne and Sydney but heaps of guys come over from WA and SA and QLD.

This is me on the road to the Mambo last year..Kite board, Windsurfer, Mal and SUP.

Each year they have an interesting Mambo T shirt and poster print..This was a couple of years ago and this kite board had the same print on it.

Check out past years posters and T shirts..I still have most of mine.. http://www.acr.net.au/~msc/history.htm

This is the BBQ tent..bacon and eggs..fresh fish, sausages and steaks etc non stop all day.

This is the action down on the beach...It looks like JB.

The sky is often full of color..There's always action on the water..in the air.

..and there's also lots of action to watch on the beach..

..and you can often find a nice little wave to yourself.

Here's a few more better pics from a ride that I did up there earlier this year camping on my motorbike.

This is just up the road at Tathra.

This is the north Merimbula beach..called Short Point.

This is the middle beach..called The Bar beach.

It's a great spot to jump in and cool of after a long days riding.

This is looking towards the Merimbula lake/inlet.

The last couple of Mambo's I SUP'ed every day and loved coming from the lake..past the Bar..and up to the pier/Aquarium..and out to the point.

This is the other side of Merimbula lake.

This is the south beach..or Main Beach (Ford Oval)..and the main location for the comp (event).

Hope to see you guys there this November..Check this out.. www.acr.net.au/~msc/

You beauty,
I haven't been for a few years. I better get back into some serious party training.
I reckon it took a good week to get over it the last time.

It will be just like a giant triathlon. Sup in the morning, Kite in the arvo and party all night.
Bring it on.[}:)][}:)]

DJ,
Do you go by yourself or is there a convoy?

Brooko,
It would be right up your alley, mixing with all the pollies and tea baggers. Might convert you!!!

Yeah we could do that or we trick JB into coming up the week before for the NATS here and then chuck all our gear into his van and then meet him there. He wouldn't even notice a few extra sup's or six.

if you organize and run the Nats the week before, I have F-all chance of making it! be realistic, two weeks before.

I can probably freight your boards for about $60 ea to windga, then I am cool to take them down from there, but it will cost a lot of beer!!!! and when I talk a lot, I mean a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't remember too much from the Mambo's I went too back in the day. I do remember feeling like crap for a couple of weeks after each event though.

hangin for it!

Already planning out some big down winders.

Pambula river mouth to Ford Ovel is about 5.5km (will take about an hour)

Tura Beach Northern access to FOrd Oval is about 7km (will take about 80minutes)

Tarthra northern access to Ford Oval is about 25km (will take about 5.5-6 hours)

assuming we get some good wind. Maybe on some of the arvo's when it gets gusty.

But most importantly, it's about 2km from ford oval to the pub! who's in for some booze cruising?

Might have to try and get over there for it - in past years i have definitely seen some great SUP waves there - i even remember seeing a guy on a sup 2 years ago.

Some great potential for great Supping / ok sailing / classic filming/ and responsible drinking (the first 2 beers are always responsible)

I'll see if i can get the cameras over too! Helmet cam footage of party waves!!

The attendance numbers could go through the roof with Suppers included in the mix.

JB...On a typical nor easter you could paddle from the bar out to the point (where you paddled last year looking for the whale) and you would be protected by the cliffs and once out at the point..and in the wind..you could do a great down winder from there all the way down to Pambula river mouth..and catch a few waves into the river and finish at that nice little protected beach on the river....Perfect!

A few years ago I windsurfed from short point all the way around and into the main beach (Ford Oval) and the locals thought it was huge (even they had never done that) and this year I'd love to do it SUP'ing and it'd be great if others could join me.

It's gunna be huge..I just hope heaps of guys (and gals) make the effort to come and show everyone how good it is.

I tried to convince John and Henry last year and they looked at me like I was a Nut'er..but now some of the locals are right into it..I took Simon (from the surf shop) and his mate Steve out for their first SUP on the lake last year when their big Naish boards arrived..They couldn't believe how big these boards were..but they loved it..I can't wait to catch up with them this year.

Let's try and outnumber the windsurfers.. ...Here's a pic of my mate John Smyth for those who don't know him..John runs the event..and yeah..He's a really nice guy..

I went down last year, had a sail on our SUP with JB, was awesome fun, wasn't much surf to Paddle so the sailing on it was a blast. it was great sunny weather on the saturday so the Girls are everywhere, so many hotties i had to get out on the water so i didn't pass out from lack of blood to my brain.. the party nights where awesome, if i wasn't mooving to W.A in a week i would go back this year 100%..

Here's my down winder plan for the Mambo.

The green arrow points to where the comp is at the Merimbula main beach (Ford Oval).

The blue arrow shows the typical Nor-Easter wind direction.

The red dots show the paddle from the Bar beach inlet out to the point totally protected from the wind by the very high cliffs.

The yellow arrow shows a perfect down winder all the way to Pambula river mouth.

I can't wait..

Looks ideal DJ. 5.1 kms. With a good Nor-East wind and swell - that'll be awesome fun.

Any more details on the event for us Mambo virgins?

How much does it cost?
Where do you stay?
Can you go just for Sat and Sun?

A poley is short for pole dancer.
Pole dancing is fun to do when the weather conditions dont allow you to either surf or SUP

Brooko I think 'high as a kite' means tea bag'ers (kiters) and pole'ies (sailboarders)..ie..poles as in masts....(I think)

As for convoy's..That was the way it was but as you get old and friends get married and have kids (and get under the thumb) times change.

I usually go with a friend in the same car but that won't happen this year with my new little car.

This year I'll just take my 8'6" Goya and 11'4" Naish..That's it....and maybe my new Naish Glide if they arrive in time...You guys are welcome to try it out.

Brooko..Most mornings and if there's no wind we all just surf..You'd fit right in.

Do it...

DJ

It costs about $100 to enter and for that you get a T shirt of the Mambo (worth $50)..and also here's the best part..All competitors get free food from the Barbie..morning lunch and tea..all you can eat..Bacon and eggs for breakie..Fresh fish and meat and coleslaw and buns all day..every day for four days..You just pay for your drinks..Bargain!!..Plus all competitors win..If not a trophy or major prize..all names go into a hat and as the names get called out you go up and select a prize..There are hundreds of sponsors that donate stuff and there's heaps of it..and it's good stuff..not crap.
