Hi all,
I'm coming into my second season, I think its time to learn some unhooked moves. Any advice for what to try first? I can currently do grabs and backrolls without sending the kite. Should i master more hooked in stuff first? Is it too ambitious to try and get handlepasses going this season?
See you on the water

Hey i just logged in to ask this very question, have the basic hooked in moves down, now i want to try something unhooked. i have no problems landing 360's wakeboarding what would be different kiting?

should the kite be powered or unpowered when we unhook?

thanks

hi Kite Kid, yeah its me JP from POM. i would have PNG on my ID but seabreeze does not have it listed as an option. I'll be in bris to do a surf judging course on the 30th looking for a kite after that tho! when will you be back in town?

back to the unhooked business, is it better to start with shorter lines than normal, i usually ride 26m but have a 20m bar set up as well.

You cant start soon enough, try anything you like. Raileys are the easiest, surface passes and then i suppose 3-0's. If you truly do it off pop all unhooked tricks will cain you pretty much the exact same ammount so theres no reason not to go anything in that respect.

I've just worked out the motions required for proper pop doing raleys at the cable park. To get this on a kite, lets say aiming for unhooked raleys, what angle should I make with the wind? If I'm still charging upwind at 25 degrees there's going to be a lot of load on the old arms and my kite might be a bit low. I'm guessing I'd be best off to flatten off a bit, or even go downwind briefly, have a bit of speed and have the kite around 45 degress? Can anyone confirm?

kite angle doesnt really mater for learning, put it as high as you want.

When your comfy put it as low as you can.

kite angle matters heaps for learning unhooked tricks carbone !

Learn to load and pop keeping the kite at 45 degs, try small jumps first then build on this by throwing your legs behind you and extending your arms out in front (super man style). Raleys are the basis for pretty much all unhooked tricks !

for looks it matters but to get the idea of popping and controlling the power its easier to start the kite out high then put it lower as you get better.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, not what kite angle, but what angle should I be tracking on the water in relation to the wind? Upwind, downwind or perpendicular to the wind? I figure 45 degress kite angle is good, that's what I want to try with, but what direction should I be heading?

monkeys and strippers get paid for tricks.
peanuts, bananas or five dolla bills.

applause comes from big slow high skilful moves or wave shredding.

spectator 1 : oh dear, that fellow just had an unfortunate fit in the air whilst he was paragliding, i hope he is alright. he made a big splash!

different location.
spectator 2 :geezus krist, did you see how high that daredevil went!?!? how good is that, i must check out this sport , it looks like so much fun.

Do a to test for yourself first.

Do an unhooked kiteloop.
understand what the consequences are.

Usually you try a pass and "boom!" a kite loop,
or you pass the bar and "boom!" a kite loop.

Be sure your safety can handle the kitloop pressure.

AND is easily relaunchable with out inverting....or
Its swim swim swim

how was the coconut classic circle jerk? plenty of wind then?

I said for "learning". GET IT, WHEN YOU ARE LEARNING!!! when you can actually get pop and not just get yanked off your rail put it lower.

Do you recommend for beginners to ride pulley and bindings?

before doing tricks unhooked, it is good to just unhook and have a cruz to get the feel of it. also you should practice unhooking and hooking in. the 1st moves i did were just small jumps of waves with no extensoin.

I learnt to go unhooked after the same tricks (backroll/grabs)and went straight into raileys...
in order i think it went
Railey
a kinda backwards sbend, so layed out backroll
s-bend

you can easily get those 3 down this season...
depending on where you kite, if waves try for a 3-0... if no waves use a railey to get height then go for the 3-0 on the way down...

the guys here in bindings seem to start with the kite high and send it down as they come into land... i dunno if they are learning or what but try it!

Thank you Carbine, just as I suspected. Something to think about anyway, now the next step is to get the hell out of Ghana and go try somewhere.

I'm going for lower kite to start with unhooked as I've got a reasonable handle on proper popping off the rail from several hundred hours at the cable park.

green': Spectators and applause be blowed, I'm only kiting for one person.

Thanks Rhys, just the info I was looking for, anyone got any Railey tips? Do you throw your legs back or do you just have to pop big enough that the pop sends them up? Also do you pull yourself towards the bar to get your legs back down or do they just come down when you do it right?
Thanks

Its a combo of you stickin your legs up and the pop... extend your arms and look down as you do it for a better feel...
when you first do it you will hold the bar in close to your body through the whole thing, concentrate on letting them out and it all just gets easier from there...
Landing is an auto thing, you just do it...
good luck!!!
