WE ALL LEARNT DIFFERENT WAYS BUT ARE WE DOING THE BEST WAY. AS ALL WE HEAR ABOUT THE LEARNERS GETTING INTO TROUBLE EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE HAD LESSONS. SHOULD THE SCHOOLS GIVE MORE TIME, MEANING INSTEAD OF ONE OR TWO LESSON DO 6-10 AND WHEN THEIR AT COMPETENT LEVEL THEN LET THEM FREE WITH A BETTER START FOR US ALL ?

No kite-schools in my town.
The newbies seem to cope alright with appropiate mentoring.
Maybe it's the environment.
Don't sweat it.

Totaly depends on the learners skills before venturing into kiting.
1. Lots of stunt kite flying and various board sports should progress at a good pace.
2. Total beginner no previous experiance in flying anything (maybe paper planes) and no board skills (never quite got the hang of that skateboard as a kid) Could take years and more than 10-15 lessons.
Then peoples capacity to learn the skills required. Some people are accountants some people are stone masons if you know what I mean.
Anyway its all good as long as youre getting off the couch.

What nice timing this post is... today was having a solo cruise a few k's from town as it was onshore marginal sheit at normal beach I surf at. anyhow at the later part of my sesh another vehicle came past and stopped for a look-c then later his mate turned up and they drove a little upwind of me.. I swear as the car drove past it had a cabrinha kite bag in the back.. So I put two n two together as since they parked up few ks from my starting point thought might as well drive up and say g’day since I had enough of a crap sesh.

First thing I asked was when I saw the kite on the beach was... so you been kitesurfing long as I noticed it took them a while to setup their peter lyn kite - how long does it take to pre-inflate them anyhow?.... turns out was his first time with a kite and his learning was based was off a video that came with the kite.. So anyhow I thought might just do a check of his lines and stuff…surprise - surprise it turns out that one front line's connected to the back line pigtail and vice versa... anyhow got it set up correctly and he launched without a prob... Duno what would happen to a kite rigged that way but I figure it might loop all the way over the steep sand bank pulling him along.. Also he rigged and was going to launch way too upwind to his vehicle that was parked on the beach so told them to move that as well. he said on his kite video it was said to launch unhooked... I didn’t buy that and said hook in and launch with one hand on your QR (check that too for him to make sure it worked) and hold the bar out all the way depowered.

Gave him more info and tips on body dragging technique and boards as he was thinking of using his surfboard to learn on...mentioned no board leashes and to put some straps on it.... least he wasn’t learning somewhere with lots of people about.. Though was a bit concerning on all his mistakes he had made. Not trying to knock the kite he used or him because his persona seemed to me to be not as much as careless but a bit ignorant and ill informed.

Its also interesting to see kite surfing kit sold in the local rag by unknowns locals of the small kite surfer group down here, which can possibly mean they wanted to get into the sport but kooked up their first attempts then gave up… which isn’t such a bad thing in some respect.. ...I say go travel and get lessons!!

I cant believe these guys that go out without a clue, but I can understand that they just don't know any better.
Personally I am a self teaching kind of guy, but having previous kite exp I understood and respected the power of 1.5m kites and wanted to be sure I had all the safety side of totaly covered before hitching up to a monster, so done a few lessons and still recieve help from Choicey (great service and advice) and know there will be no end to learning through experiances good and bad.
Couldent even imagie the "THRILL" you would get by strapping yourself to 12m of kite and flying straight into the power zone for the first time thinking I can fly these things, I had some cool diamond kites with tails on them when I was 8yrs old, how hard can it be.
PS. I actually can imagine that thrill. Have been drilled badly many times and by various means.

I think you have a valid argument sunami, although there is another problem within the relm of learnig.
This is the level of professionalism and experience of those teaching.
Just as the ignoratnt learner kiter has problems diving into a new experience, so do newbe instructors in all sports. This is a concern in the sport of kiting as there are all kinds of variables as it is dynamic by nature.
How much mentoring and or teaching experience does an intructor have under their belt before being able to take a class.
I guess my point is just because you are a ripper yourself does not equip you in all circumstances such as the dynamics of a teaching lesson. That is if you are equipped with some qualifications to start with.
Hmmm!
