A big thankyou to eveyone who helped scare the hell out of me ... but i survived and had a fantastic time
PORT HEDLAND is beautiful, the people, the town... the spoil bank
i have absolutely no idea what the nightlife is like and i dont think id want to but our nights were spent in the pool drinking away...

port hedland is an awesome place for kiting. imagine the spit at woodies, only 200 times longer.... i loved it and cant wait to go back... and am planning on going back very soon

you are NOT going to believe this but it is the most hilarious story EVER
(keep in mind my post on sea creature and what can kill me apart from sharks seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=26656 )

it was about 15kn and i went out on my 9m, it was pancake flat...crystal clear water.... i couldnt believe my eyes
decided to wear my booties just in case
my friend launched me and off i went ... i had the biggest smile on my face and couldnt believe how brave i was

i had forgotten to adjust my footstraps to accomodate my booties so had to stop... still couldnt loosen them so yelled out ot my friend to give me a hand..he met me half way...

off i went again... all of a sudden i heard screaming and yelling and i looked behind me, he was kicking his leg like crazy... at first i thought this was another of his jokes on me but then saw something hanging off his foot... it was a SHARK... a baby shark but a shark nevertheless.... he was in ankle deep water!

i coulnt believe what was happening and kited back to the shore quicker then ever... i was horrified and so worried for him
luckily he was ok... he was in shock.. he was wearing sandals and luckily it had a hard base

after realising he was ok, boy did we all laugh... it was THE MOST hilarious thing that id ever seen... the way he was kicking and swearing trying to get the shark off him... he was yelling for help but my dad was too scared not knowing what it was at first

the best part is that we have the whole thing on video

i felt so guilty about calling him in the water for help and he has told me he will never go in the ocean again lol

i am so glad he didnt lose a foot or anything otherwise my life wouldnt be worth living!

definately worth it...
you can kite from the carpark near the road, or get a car down the tracks you can see
better still if you had a 4wd you could start from further down the spit

it is AMAZING

WooHoo, Kim, I am glad you had a good time.
I am eager to see the video, I am preparing myself to have a big laugh.
Hope to see you all sometime this year, when I will visit Perth, we may have another kitesurfing meet, like the one the other year.
Cheers,

Silviu

AAAAhhhhhh. The Spoil bank.
The best spot in town.
Nonikkers... How quickly does the water go deep off the bank!
Did you kite the side the port is on or the bay side? (I think it was a bay)
Glad you had an awesome trip.

yes the spoil bank aaaahh
just dont stand still in the water!
it is shallow for AGES

i was walking around a few hundres metres from the shore and it was not even up to my knees (this was before the shark attack)

the tide was going out
i was kiting in the bay down the bottom just where it starts to kick up on the left

the thing is there isnt much else to do up there... and im not too sure what accomodation is like becasue i stayed with a friend

but BOY the kiting is great

Port Headland the land of early mornings in the dinghy, mangroves , super cold beer and monster mud crabs. Take your chances with the sharks and the muddies plenty of incentive to stay on your board.

i had a hard time finding info on the wind and directions
i went out at about 2pm and it was 15 kn at a guess
i was staying upwind on my 9m im 48kg
i had no idea what the other guys were on they were at the other end of the bay
it picked up a fair bit
it is windy all teh time there from from i was told... the bay seems pretty safe to kite no matter what wind direction i think

i heard about those crabs... i thought my friend was joking with me lol

i just think that as long as you are moving the sharks will stay away, so dont just stand around in the water.
i feel so lucky becasue when i was initially trying to fix my straps i was sitting in the water... i can only imagine what could have been bitten off!
