Damn... I just saw on the news a kitesurfer in townville had something snap and had his kite fly into powerlines blacking out the town. From the footage it looked like a switchblade2. Anyone have any more info on this?

Hit the Palleranda powerlines quite a way down from where we normally launch and land. Don't know all the details. Saw the kite... Switchblade2 12m. Now has a hole the size of a baseball. Palleranda is a small suburb. Missed the 5pm news. Not sure what was said but it probably isn't good....

Bloody lei kite riders if it had of been a peter lynn foil it would have just auto-zenithed. Then there would have been no problems.

All I have ever seen are turtles off Palleranda, but there is supposedly a Tiger Shark breeding area off Maggie's West Point that is not all that far away by kite. Neophin better off to comment, he's the local sea creature expert.

2 days ago a girl swam from the Townsville Strand around the island and back to Palleranda. 46km swim I believe, cruised by West point, no shark cage and lived to catch the footy on TV later that day.

Tigers are pretty rare around the island and the whole GBR for that matter. I've never seen one in nearly 2000 hours underwater. I think you have more to worry about from crocs and box jellyfish at palla.

Was that coffeebean's SB2 that went into the wires?

Good wind and tides for kiting the island today, if anyone wants to come over and get into the wave and flat water combo at nelly bay (where the water is at least clear enough to see the tigers coming). Come on the 12 midday ferry, 2-4pm will be the best of it. Give me a call 0419 712 579 I can pick you up from the ferry.

actually, a PL venom 2 13m nearly made it to the powerlines at the same time....the guy was self landing as usual but something went wrong and the kite (still pressurised as zip closed) floated quite a distance snagging in a tree and flapping out past it threatening to take out the power lines in that spot....luckily a quick tree climb and opening the zipper allowed it to be rescued in time...

and a learner on the shore trying to launch looked like he was going to make it a hat trick at one stage....

fingers crossed that the **** doesn't hit the fan too hard next week....

I was only fishing for a bite with comment I had made.

But on a serious note I do hope that there are no bad repacutions from what has happened.

I was kiting along and i seen the SB 2 float past, the leash broke on the dude after crashing. The kite just floated and keep going up flew over the tree line on the beach and across two roads. (prob 250m) Then the bar got caught in the powerlines and pulled it in. the kite layed on the lines and a couple of sparks and crackles then booooooom!!!!

The kite then picked up and landed in a tree with the bar and lines still wrapped in the power lines.

We then had the awkward moment of locals imerging from the houses with pitchforks and lantens.

trouble is brewing. pal resident group are trying to get us to kite elsewhere. cause they don't want us to get hurt. LOL. theres no other places to kite safely cept island. which is 30-40 min ferry ride. and is unpractical for most in a arvo. real issue here is ergon need to put powerlines undergroud. they have all the way to retirement home then stops 500m b4 pallarenda. and kitebeach. pallarenda is first place in t'ville to get powerout normally. some kid can throw a rock at a powerpole there and our power cuts out.

I just checked the notes I made last time this happened...
Eight phones calls to six different people in the council, trying to arrange a meeting to convince them that the 'B' option was not the best way to solve the problem. (seen by a few people as an easy fix).
Fortunately, the issue seemed to die a natural death before things went too far. Hopefully there will not be a knee jerk reaction to this incident.

It was just unlucky. He did an unhooked trick, s**t happened, he let go and then his safety leash snapped. It was unlucky. It wasnt like the last time when the dude fought with the kite all the way to the lines thinking he could save it, it was an accident. You don't see them banning cars off the the roads cause some idiot was drunk and ran into a powerpoll. And thats how the news portraied it- although they did say 7 suburbs went down. This will die down. At the end of the day so far, it's only a bucket of words.

A safety leash snapping is not unlucky! Its equipment failure, Safety equipment that your supposed to rely on to make it safer,
or is it really just bling!!!
