I went back to Cairns for 10 days and got to ride 4 days - could have ridden more but had to work. I was stunned twith the lack of people kiting there. Last Year on on a solid day with good conditions we would see up to 50 kites out.
Last Sunday was one of the best days of the season and i counted a max of 12 kites out.
This is great as you dont have to worry about the crowds.
There is still a crew of diehard locals but that is thinning. At this rate we will be out numbered by the 2 polesurfers ( who by the way are very talented riders).
I am interested in why poeple think the numbers have dropped .....it can't be just because I moved to the sunny coast.

Yeah, numbers have dropped off dramatically from what I see.

Just a few hard core crew and some new beginners.

I don't know about World wide. It's strange to read people complaining on Forums about crowds and criticising those that try to promote the sport, for increasing those crowds. We are usually looking for someone to kite with !

Numbers have dropped off in Maui as well, but some spots in Europe,South America etc. seem to be booming !

The same thing happened in Windsurfing.Went from mad crowds to stabilizing numbers. Great to get Hookipa with a dozen to 20 out instead of 50 !

As for a reason ? I think it is because people become disillusioned with the sport when they find that you just can't go when you want to.

If you work all week and its windy, then the weekend comes and there is nothing, you can get very dissapointed.

or it could be the fact that you nearly had a stretch of 3 months of no wind....

More like the whole season

Oh well, maybe next year......

Numbers have dropped dramatically both locals and visitors, even the 'diehards' have become very frustrated.

Hang gliding suffered a similar fate plus the dramatic news of someone getting smashed every now and then putting people off .Perhaps people now days too are risk averse and prefer to get their thrills with the xbox

Perhaps also in order to pay outragous mortgages they are spending more time at work to pay for it and not so much time for fun that coincides with the available wind

Hi Guys,

I'm just back from Port Douglas, and can tell you it blew hard all week I was there and apparently the week before too. Numbers have thinned due to a crappy season up north. Very little wind over their normal season time but it sure is howling now. Everyday 20+ knots up to almost 30 on Saturday.

Good fun and nice and warm.

Sorry for the bad news,
