I can either work for my old company and do 40 hours a week and be home every day OR I can FIFO 8 days on 6 days off. Both pay the same.
Which job would you take?
Or I can stay unemployed and wait for the bank to take my families home away from us

A 40 hour week at home I would pick. If you start at 7 or 8 in the morning you would finish by 3-4, get to the beach by 5, two hours left for a sail, everyday its blowing.

plus if you are gone for 8 days, those 8 days may coincide with special dates (birthdays, an anniversary, etc), where as if you are still at home you can still celebrate those special moments........... (Just a chick's point of view on it)

Been in the same situation (hubby away for long periods) and he said he felt suffocated when he got home and he missed our 1st child's first steps. It was very lonely for me and in the end it was for him too.....

Last summer I was doing 40 hours a week in Perth, right now I'm out in the middle of nowhere on 8/6. Last summer I kited every windy day except one, this summer I'm going nucking futs. If your breaks don't line up with the good days it is a strain, and even when they do if there are more good days while you're away you pine for them a bit. At least I do.

The 6 day weekends are pretty sweet though.

Which job would I take? Probably the stay at home one. I expect you'll be doing at least 12 hour days on site, so that averages out to a 48 hour week anyway.

In fact, what I tried to do was 8/6 in winter and office work in summer, but couldn't score a Perth project this time round. Maybe next year. I've got a sinking feeling I'll be doing 8/6 for most of my working life at the moment though...

Home wins every time.

Same pay is silly. 8/6 is worth +60% $$ - and that's not enough

Leech is right. No brainer.

All very good points and opinions fellas.
Ive been thinking about it all bloody weekend and its given me a headache.
Found out today too that FIFO will pay 40k more.
GreenPat, it sounds like your the same as me. I cannot bare to miss any wind time.
Just comming back from a FIFO 4 weeks on 1 week off was hard enough and the season hadnt really started yet. Although I did miss my annual Corros trip.
I thought the ultimate FIFO would be an 8 and 6.
Yes this job offers 12 hour days. So that does make it 96 hours a stint which means 192 hours a month and 12 days off compared to... being at home doing 160 hours a month and 6 days off. BUT... FIFO only allows me to windsurf 12 out of 30 days and the job at home will give me 30 out of 30 possible windsurfing days. Oh correction... 26 out of 30 days because I dont windsurf on Sundays.
The flights are only 50mins and FIFO in company time so I get the full 6 days at home. A 6 day weekend sounds the goods. BUT...
no garrantee that there will be wind AND SWELL when Im home and I also will miss my wife and kids.
Being home everyday does sound nice BUT 6 day weekends sounds even better.
I could definately do it during winter no doubt about that!
Sorry Im just typing down my thoughts on this painful decision.
Deep down I know which path Im gonna take.
@#$% Im sooo addicted to windsurfing it bloody makes my life decisions for me.

That or 7/7, which a few lucky people get. But it's still FIFO.

get your contractors ticket, set yourself up and work for whom you like, you make the decisions. Money is Ok if youve got a couple of good mobs to work for. Work hard and smart, 4 days a week, have along weekend everyweekend, do your invoicing, get an apprentice and go for it. Lots of people do it.
