2 swimmers swept out to sea were rescued by two local kiters Phil mc Farlane and Simon Cossitini this evening .Reports are that the swimmers were almost drowned when the guys dragged them in.the lifeguards were long gone and it is just as well kitesurfing hasn't been banned in Newcastle or we could have been reading about two dead swimmers in tomorrows paper
Well done guys and also well done to the kiters out there today who showed excellent seamanship and beach ettiquette in rough conditions.

Rebel .... I was just thinking that myself .... I guess if they were conscious and had strength you could have them hold the strap at the back of you harness and just body drag your way back in ... but if they were weak or unconscious itwould be a different story as you would have to hold them .... bye bye board ! and you would have to be a little easier on the power too I would imagine .... I hope I don't have to find out ....

Well done gents

Thanks for passing this along. Sounds like another "Way To Go" rescue story should be pulled together. Oz has quite a few in there already, well done! Anyway I could ask some questions via PM or email to fill in the picture? If you would like PM ricki or email flkitesurfer (at) hotmail.com

These types of incidents should all be compiled so when any council or other authority focus on the negatives of kitings; we can present them with some positives.
I rescued 2 children at flat rock NSW about a year ago. The rip had taken them out, and one in particular was screaming/panicking and going under. I wanted to bring them in one at a time, but decided I was better off just keeping them afloat even if I couldn't get in. I had one on my back and the other I held with one arm. As it was, I had just enough wind to work the kite and get them in.
The children were part of a school surfing group approx 30 with one teacher and one surf instructor. The teacher was no longer on the beach and instructor totally oblivious to what went on; untill right at the end. A sheepish thanks (which is fine by me) was all I received, as I think there would have been ramifications for the supervision of the group, if any publicity occured.
Anyway well done to the newey crew!

I always knew htis but kitesurfers=legends.
Very good for our image.
to hold them .... bye bye board ! and you

hahaha, i dont think so, they had just better hope they can swim longer. Only kidding, but they could lie on your board, grab onto the back of you harness and you body drag towing thme in, and they float themselves this way.just a thought, would like to know what to do in a situation like tha.

A bit more on this .The Simon involved was kiwi Simon Bull (local rider on 13 m venom)Simon was saying it was actually a great community effort .there was a large group of middle eastern students and a bunch of them got into trouble .Simon was coming in on his last run and saw something bobbing around right out the back (about 150 m out) went over for a look and the guy was yelling out .by the time Simon got there he was doing the starfish under water (he was gone ) Simon ditched his board and reached down and pulled the guy out of the water and dragged him back in under his arm.
phil went out and dragged another guy in who was in trouble and some local girls who wer swimming dragged some other guys in.
The lifeguards had gone for the day but fortunately the clubbies were doing some training and helped revive the guys until the ambos arrived

Its a scary situation for a kiters and the people that need rescuing.. Well done to the kiters who have helped swimmers. Its great to know that everyone is keeping an eye out for people.

It would be good to get it in the papers.. There are still heaps of people who go swimming when the life guards go in. And Kiters are always out to near sun down.

And would be excellent for our reputation as a community

Brilliant idea. A job for AKSA imo.
There has been several incidents like this one.
A 'rescues' section in the new website would make for great reading & provide the archive as well.

Well done Phil & Simon. Be good to hear the whole story.

As to how this can be done.
I still have my reel leash attached to the back of my harness. Despite the 'kook' look you never even know its there & I reckon it could be 'reel' useful if you ever had to drag some one in; esp if its 'reel' light wind. Drag 3 metres then 'reel' in; drag 3M then 'reel' in. Even in stronger wind it may just be a whole lot easier having them a few metres back rather than hanging off your back

Great effort !
I seriously reckon that rescue techniques should be incorporated into Kiting Lessons as a matter of the course.

We should all know how to rescue efficiently, and effectively not just self rescue.

The more people that read this VERY important thread the better AKSA WAKSA ?

Well done guys.
I've seen a windsurfer get a big wipe out at a well know W.A spot, lost his gear and was floundering in the break running out of energy. Kitesurfer comes alongside, windsurfer grabs back of kiters harness and gets dragged out of the break and back to his gear.

in strong winds a competent kiter should be able to do it but light winds or an fat guy to tow in would be a good test of your abilities

well done for saving a life

It wasn't lite winds...nor were they fat guys! But thanks for the negativity and (not so) subtle swipe at these "heros" efforts.

I know both Simon and Phil and they are good guys. Don't try to belittle their effort with cheap swipes.

Tiz the season to be jolly..

dont be a douche, read it as two separate things hence the one line space. one; it would be impressive if there wasnt much wind or a massive fat guy and the second part as well done to who ever it was cus they may have well and truly stopped a guy from drowning

as an example of sarcasm so you can tell in the future [still no idea why you would read its differently]:
in strong winds a competent kiter should be able to do it but light winds or an fat guy to tow in would be a BETTER test of your abilities... well done for saving a life
