direct off shore was always going to be interesting.. i was helping in one rescue, saw 3 people getting rescued by a boat and about 4 people having to ditch and swim back in, and heard a grommit getting slammed in to the groin.. sounds like it hurt bro :) and to top it off i lost my keys to my bike and my house and my van and my girlfriends car, this is all on the same keychain mind you. its somewhere around beach 3. Anyone pick them up by anychance? or anyone got a metal detector they wouldnt mind lending out :)

Unavoidable really, lots of people out on the offshore side, not all completely up to scratch. Way more dangeous than your typical SW offshore breeze for woodies, at least you wash up in the bay near freo some where, today it was Garden Island or Africa.

You did good helping those guys out, props.

Some people have to learn to know when to call it quits and swim in, and I noticed a few people who definately left it too late to make this call in a dyeing offshore breeze more than 1 km out. Very hard to swim against. Luckily a boat picked 'em up which was nice of them.

Don't go out further than you want to swim in. If your drifting out too sea not able to make it upwind or relaunch maybe at around 500m out its time to call it quits and for your own safety just swim it in. Better than rely on the wind to turn it on again or for someone to recue you.

The carnage yesterday was kind of funny in a scary way, I havent kited woodies often but each time the spectacle (as well as the session) has made for an interesting day!
I made the personal decision not to kite beach 2 (offshore) just in case I stuffed up as I didnt want to become a statistic, thus I was amazed when one guy who couldnt even manage upwind on beach 3 onshore wandered over to kite the offshore side. It was not suprising to see him heading straight out to sea 10 minutes later...do people just put their brains into neutral when they turn off Rockingham road
I am annoyed with myself that I didnt spot this guy and advise him against offshore side before it was too late, and impressed at the rider who went down into the sound to help him out, a braver and more generous soul than me.

Let's not forget the kiter who dropped his doona into a windsurfer. lines wrappped around fin, boom etc. Never seen a guy swim so fast away from his gear.

Definitely some no style no idea twats out there.

Hope you find your keys Ben.

yes well lets just say he wasn't a local... i tried to help him get him back to shore seeing if he could stay upwind by following my wake. But he could hardly stand up!

He couldn't body drag upwind to get to his board and after attempting to grab his board for him and having to do a flying kite loop crash to avoid him hitting my lines and us becoming tangled and both stuck out at sea. The only other option i had was to ride back upwind to a boat and ask him to do the rescue.

He is one that deserves the praise, he looked quite happy sitting fishing, i hope the guy that got rescued was very appreciative.. i don't think he came back after he was dropped off.

That was a serious brain fart on his part though how could he have thought it would have ended any different if he couldn't go up wind???

Well, awesome selfless effort, Ben to try and rescue him.
He wasnt making any effort to rescue himself!
I did see him later, collecting his gear from the beach, pity he didnt have a look for your keys while he was at it .

The fisherman in the dingy picked up 2 or 3 others as well, I hope the rescued kiters were suitably effusive in thanking him for saving their assess (and kit too).

That was F**ked!!

What a sweet session, I can't believe how many people are out there at this time of year. I thought most kiters went into hibernation over winter.

Unbelievable that some kook who can't even ride was so far off shore, even crazier was watching a group putting up a 10m kite for a lesson, with the wind building, possible squalls and a gale force warning on the forecast.

And who was that nutter out there in boardies with no wetsuit?? I was still cold in a full length wettie - even with my boardies over the top!!

Lovin these crazy riding days!

That dude had so much stoke running thru his veins he didn't feel the cold.

If you're already feeling the chill early June, best head into Choice and try on a 5/3 Mystic. Sooooooo toasty, looking forward to MR.

Dunno of anyone else in Perth that sells thick steamers.

I must admit I just thought f*ck 'em it was light and directly offshore not much you could do, good to see someone tried but like always its visitors causing the trouble and people who are out of their depth.

Well done, that's a result !

I lost my wedding ring many moons ago, and hired a metal detector. Lost it on a football pitch, turns out there was an old rubbish tip underneath, so every squre inch of grass was registering on the bloody thing.

Started to think I'd paid good money for a large paperweight that beeped constantly. Never found it.

hehe didnt find any lost jewellry i think it would be worth taking to a beach with more traffic. This thing was no paper weight.. it would tell you wether it thought it was a bottle cap 1,2 50c ect and approximatly how deep it was. but im a little to impatient to actually search so im happy to just wear the $30. glad i got they keys back good day in the end.. and it looks like we have wind for the weekened so im happy :)

My grandad used to lend me a metal detector when I went to his place. when I was like 8. Used to goto the beach and find like $40 in change in the sand each time... along with a few syringes one time ,its like a treasure hunt, but when you win you get AIDs.
