Just got back from bali and went to pump up my 7 m which didnt get used while i was away.... leaking like a siv ....further investigation revealled that there was sand in the very end of the leading edge bladder and the tip of 2 struts.
Due to the kite being packed between the boards it seems that the constant vibration of the flight shreaded lots of holes - too many to repair - so had to drop a new set in

so not qite sure how to prevent sand from getting in there -

clean your pump out regularly. it can suck up a lot of sand and shell fragments.
and close off your deflate valve once your kite is rolled up to stop sand in the canopy working its way in

thanks - I never thought about the pump
trouble is we end up using pump stashed at the take of spots on the downwind sections

good call on closing the dump

if you wanna get really particular about it go and get some air filter foam that some v8 guys put on their engines (looks kinda like the foam on the old earphones), strap it onto your pump with a cable tie, bobs your uncle.

I hope the manufacturers are listening. The intake filter is a top idea & while we're at it I'd like a socket to plug the hose end into out of the way when not in use.
You can take all the care in the world yourself, but with 2nd hand kites this is a real risk.

Always be really careful to never let the inlet valve fall in the sand, and try and sit the pump on a board, kite or bag between uses. Before you start pumping always blow the inlet valve out then pump it 2 or 3 times to blow any air outa the pipe.

Works a treat.

A valve just like in the actually kite would work fine here, all pumps are exactly the same and mass produced, but making a secondary attachment between the hose and the nozzle would be easy as pie. so too would one with a built in filter for the suction end of the handle (no one actually uses the suction bit anymore do they???)

actually, i said it first, my idea, copyright me 2008
