I just got to see the first pics of the new Kialoa paddle called the Methane.

It was designed with Blane Chambers from Paddle Surf Hawaii and it has a slightly smaller blade size than the popular Shaka Pu'u.

Here's a couple of pics... btw.. I will have one at Torquay on the 18th for people to try.

This is from the Kialoa site.

--------------------------

The Shaka Pu'u blade profile is our smallest paddle and allows for quick acceleration through the water without pulling the surfer off balance. Ideal for catching waves and keeping yourself in the surf.

Surface Area: 100 sq in
Blade Width: 8 5/8"
Blade Length: 16 1/2"
Weight: 22 oz

---------------------------

The Methane is 8" wide... I'm not sure what the inches area is.

I think this is an important point.. "without pulling the surfer off balance"

I first thought the Methane would be good paddle for women and children but Blare's no lightweight..and it seems the bigger guys are also liking it.

Kia Kaha Paddles will also have a Surfing size Paddle out for the Summer Season.

Blade Width 8'
Blade Length 17'
Angle 8 degrees

Not only will this be great in the surf but for marathon paddling towards the end of races

Thanks Champ.

I should have one any day now.. I can't wait to test it out and see just how powerful it is and also see if I can overpower it and make it cavitate.

I have bought one for my daughter to use.. She can use it when I'm not using it..

I love the long narrow shape and the way you can paddle fast without pulling yourself off balance.. It should also work well half dipping.

BTW.. The first two places in the Battle of the Paddle yesterday were using Kialoa Shaka Pu'u paddles..

Hi DJ,
I finally got to use a Kialoa over the hols. It must have been the Shaka, very light paddle. It was a lot stiffer than I thought it would be, but it has a little more flex than my full carbon one. Real easy to paddle and no walk even with the flat blade when powering.

I am also making smaller blades for the surf, you really don't need that much leverage in the surf and when you get going a big blade grabs to much water and slips in the power, as well as putting you off balance. Especially when trying to power around white water, big blades are good for big dings at the tail of your board.

A couple of design points that I observed on the Shaka are the flat blade surface, no dihedral, and the narrow top of the blade at the neck near the shaft. The blade has a small curve longitudinally, this I feel makes it easier to enter the water and starts the power a bit earlier. My chilli one is a bit harder to enter the water and pulls later, but it is a smaller blade than the Shaka and is flat in both planes but it does have a 12 degree blade angle. It was made neutral to test this sort of stuff.

The Shaka also has less flex on the side of the shaft and virtually no twist thru the shaft at all.

My thinking on the Shaka ( this is the only major paddle I have used ) is that less side flex and no twist reduces paddle walk as well as lower blade surface area and a narrower blade at the neck. Good paddling tecnique also helps.

What do you think?

Hi Rod.. Glad you got to try the Kialoa.. and I agree with you.. Good that you noticed the flex that I would rather call 'spring'.. it's not soft and flexy.

It does enter the water very silently and it does require a good paddling technique to get the most out of these paddles.. (I think)

I was wondering about paddling faster and found that with most paddles it's very hard to paddle fast with the blade fully dipped.. I think the narrower blade helps.

The Shaka Pu'u is 8 5/8" wide and the Nalu 9 1/4" and I can easly notice the difference. The Methane is only 8" wide.. and I'm sure I will notice the difference also.

When you make your next paddle you should try a similar shape blade.. and what did you think of the Kialoa shaped shaft?.. It's pretty narrow and rectangular isn't it.

Hey Brooko.. Sounds like you're getting a Methane (or Shaka Pu'u).. Congrats.. You're gunna love it.

Hi DJ,

I am currently drawing up all my latest paddles in Boardcad so I can post them up. I have a copy of the Shaka and compared to my full carbon one it is a bit shorter and about 3cm narrower, mostly above the wide point. I don't get any walking with it any more, I suppose I'm used to it, but I do get told that it walks when I lend it.

The thinner handle / shaft was no trouble and felt good in the hand, but I still prefer a larger diameter shaft, I just like the feel, maybe its too many years windsurfing and kitesurfing with their bar dia. My thinking on the smaller Dia shaft by the majors has got to do with strength and weight. A smaller Dia lets you put thicker wall sections into the shaft for extra strength.

I am going to start a new post about paddle design so many questions and I'm trying to work them out by building my own paddles and showing you Breezers the results.
When I start the new post maybe we can get Woogie and the other paddle makers to give us some insight into their design thinking. SUP paddle making is only in its infancy.

I'll start tonight after I have tested the modifications to my chilly paddle.

Rod in regards to the walking a flat face paddle will always walk regardless of the head width , the water needs direction to flow off the face and thats what a diheral does it controls the flow off the blade face evenly in all directions.

Piros thats what I thought, now I think that low-aspect blades (blade width is half of or greater than blade length) need dihedral and low aspect don't. I am building a couple of blades to test this idea.

Have you used the Shaka? This is close to what I would call a hi-aspect blade.
Novice paddlers would find this blade walks a lot, the person who owned the paddle that I used said he had trouble at first, then changed his paddle style and has had no more trouble with walking.

But hey Piros nothing is set in concrete, SUP paddle design parameters are still changing daily, weekly. What about flex and where it should be positioned on the shaft? So many questions!

We should start a new post about this subject, called paddle design. I have just got back from dinner for my wifes birthday, and a couple of bottles of wine later I'm not coherrent enough to start a new post. I have to go to the sunny coast tommorrow and thurs, be back friday.

Nice quiver of Kialoas, DJ. Very jealous. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

Have you put PVC tape on the blade edge or is that how it comes?
Is the Methane's handle the same as the others?

Yes Dave I'll be there from about 9.30 on..Are you coming?.. You can try my Kialoa paddles and see what you think.

Casso.. I put the tape on them all..I took the tape off my paddles not long ago because I never seem to hit the board anymore..other than the slight tap with the shaft.

Then about a week ago I was stepping off my board and placed the paddle on the deck as I stepped of and accidentally slid the paddle across the deck.. It made the sound of chalk on a blackboard and scratched the deck of my board..and I thought if the tape was still on it would not have scatched...So I put it back on.

Champ the Glide might be here in a couple of weeks.. (fingers crossed)

I tested out my new Methane today and it was..arr..er..interesting.

Brooko... Check this out for when you cut your new Methane..

I have a couple of pictures to post from today and I'll explain my thoughts on the 'small' Kialoa Methane paddle.
